Minecraft Discussion Thread

so, with the news that the Nether is getting a slight overhaul, including new biomes, better pigmen, etc, I thought it'd be a neat idea to make a discussion thread so that we could share marginally decent Minecraft servers together. And mods / modpacks, challenges, redstone builds, etc.

What biome did you vote for in the poll on twitter? My bet was on Badlands, personally, but the winning entry was Mountains.

Kitalpha Hart 09-29-2019 03:21 PM

Mine's on the Switch so it has that stuff built in
And no Nintendo Online subscription so I'm offline only

I usually hear about polls and results long after the fact too lol

I do post stuff on my insta occasionally tho, and on discord a person I share a server with and I swap houses to design, as they use the Sims. It's a fun challenge, even on Creative

Stabbsworth 09-29-2019 04:02 PM

what stuff is built into the bedrock version? :0c

i hear there's a few differences, such as how redstone works.

Coda 09-29-2019 06:37 PM

Bedrock comes with all sorts of resource pack demos, and it's got a lot better multiplayer functionality. Beyond that, every patch brings Bedrock and Java closer to parity.

The main difference in redstone between Bedrock and Java is how redstone-powered blocks (such as pistons and dispensers) are powered. In Bedrock, a redstone line running beside one of these blocks will turn to go directly into the block. In Java, it won't, and you have to come at it from two blocks away in order to get the line pointing in the right direction. Java also has a phenomenon known as "quasi-connectivity" that makes things kinda weird and hard to predict; it's useful for fancy contraptions, but it's hard to understand and work with, especially if you're not an experienced redstoner.

I've got Mario themed stuff
And there's a Mario themed world prebuilt

:D eyyy a Minecraft thread!
I suck at playing Minecraft, <x} but it would be cool to join a server that isn't my brother's for random shenanigans. I play Minecraft on my PC. :/ Though I can't change my skin for some reason. I'm not super tech savvy, so I'd probably need help with that.
<.<; I mostly just use creative mode because I love sandboxes...I'm working on a Pokémon League based on my gym leader typing parties in games Blue, Soul Silver, Sapphire, Platinum and White. >u> I already built all 5 Gyms dedicated to my Poison, Flying, Water, Grass and Dark teams. Now I just have to make it look like a single building.. :/

On survival mode, I made a cobblestone house on the peak of a mountain, because why not? <X] Then I died several times, trying to get my stuff back from a Drowned and a Skeleton with Gold Armor on it. :[ Not fun. But it was frustratingly hilarious. X}

Coda 09-29-2019 11:03 PM

Merskelly, you might be interested in the Pokecraft mod then. (Assuming it's still around and hasn't gotten hit with a copyright takedown...)

I've got a world I've been playing with my son. I've been doing a lot of behind-the-scenes work lately as just a way to unwind; Minecraft is great for that. We've got our base set up on an island, and it's kind of a cute house, two stories tall with a big cobblestone chimney on one side connected to a smokehouse. Upstairs is where our beds are, and we've got a couple armor stands with spare equipment on them there as well as a jukebox. Downstairs has brewing and crafting stuff.

The smokehouse contains a super-smelter -- chests and hoppers connected to a furnace so you don't have to watch it to load it and unload it, you just throw all of your cookable/smeltable stuff into the chest on top and throw your coal in the chest on the left when you come back from an adventure, and it all comes out into the chest on the bottom.

But the real fun begins when you open the trapdoor in the smokehouse and climb the ladder down into the underground complex.

Level B1: Netherwart farm
Level B2: Nether portal room
Level B3: Automatic melon and bamboo farms, bulk storage room (for stuff like cobblestone that I have way too much of), and an airlock.

There's a spiral staircase that keeps going down from here into the mines; there's a slime farm down there but it doesn't work very well because drowned spawn in the ocean outside and fill up the mob cap. :/ There's a very long tunnel that goes to a skeleton spawner XP farm and an abandoned mineshaft that's been the source of most of my diamonds so far (though I don't have very many yet).

If you go into the airlock, you can either go out into the sunken caves under the island, or you can go through a glass tunnel to the mainland, where you come up inside a polished diorite lighthouse. There's a chicken coop outside as well, and any eggs the chickens inside lay are collected and automatically hatched into a trap that lets baby chickens stand around just fine but grown-up chickens are automatically harvested for meat and feathers.

I'm working on collecting every kind of tree in a tree nursery here, but I haven't found dark oak yet. I've also got a farm that grows every kind of crop (except beetroot, I have more beetroot than I could ever do anything with) including bamboo (I had to go on an expedition to find some). There's a cow pen and a rabbit hutch as well.

Coincidentally, the nether portal connects directly to a nether fortress. I didn't plan this but it worked out great. I've got a couple roads set up there that go to portals that lead to a stronghold and a village.

The last fun thing I've got set up is a secret button inside the house -- if you stand at the foot of the stairs and press the button, the floor drops down like an elevator to deposit you inside the enchanting room. A different button down here opens up an exit door into the netherwart farm.

i just like messing around on hypixel's skyblock.

i know how to make a watermelon / sugarcane farm that constantly goes off. enough of those, and you can theoretically lag a server. might see if i can't recreate it and make sure it only goes off when something's grown.

Coda 09-30-2019 12:27 PM

It's easy to make it only go off when something's grown. You just point an observer at it. (Unfortunately, this requires nether quartz.)

I applied for a job with Hypixel once upon a time. Actually, he reached out to me. And... then he disappeared. >.>;

you might be able to get a job with Hytale? it's a spiritual successor to MC and it's being made by the guys at Hypixel. they might need coders.

Coda 09-30-2019 01:39 PM

I don't need a job now. This was like four years ago.

Stabbsworth 09-30-2019 01:48 PM

ah.

i actually kinda like watching ethoslab, but it's sort of hard to keep up because there's no proper subtitles.

Coda 09-30-2019 01:50 PM

I totally forgot about Etho. I follow SethBling but I didn't use YouTube's subscription function until relatively recently.

Stabbsworth 09-30-2019 01:51 PM

ye, sethbling does some neat stuff too.

Has anyone ever tried to build a town, and then started over along the way for one reason for another? That's been my issue so far. XD
I usually play in Creative mode to try to do that. The last time I had something really awesome, I was able to build some sports arenas: hockey, track and field, basketball. I'm not too familiar with command blocks, so I was using some basic redstone stuff to power things up. I think I still have its save file somewhere...

Stabbsworth 10-06-2019 10:40 AM

i only know basic redstone and not enough to utilize command blocks. i might look into getting better with redstone tbh.
