Every year I want to do this and every year I can never think of anything worthy of an entire novel. This year will be much the same because I just don't have the time as I'm still a graduate student. But next year, I hope to!

You should just try one year even though you don't have anything worthy of an entire novel. Sometimes the story unfolds while you're writing it. And if nothing else, you can combine several short stories with an overall theme. (Not having time is a whole other issue of course.)

There have been a lot of times when I've used NaNo as a way to practice some aspect of writing. Usually when I'm stuck on my novel, I'll work on something like dialogue or better descriptions. It might be totally unrelated to the story, and in that case I throw it at the end of my document with an empty page in between. It's still writing and still helpful and you can still count your words.

as i told someone on another forum, there's always Camp NaNo, in April and July, and i believe you can set your own word count goals for the camps. =)

And yes you can set your own goal for camp. I think the lowest is around 50 words or so, at least ridiculously low. So even if you have no time whatsoever you could write the first paragraph of your story in your lunch break, or a haiku each time you wait for your computer to boot. This reply already has 65 words altogether. |
