Don't Set My Role, [M] [Kit Katy & daikokunyo]

Premise

This world stuck to roles typically found in most fairytales. You were either a villain, a hero, or a damsel in distress. There wasn't an in between, and you certainly couldn't choose which role you'd have when you matured. Some, like this villainess, found this set of unspoken rules to be gravely boring. Sure, playing her part was fun in a way, but to be slain and completely viewed as a horrible person? That felt unfair, unjust.

Welcome to the story of a hero and villain whom chose their ideal ways of life instead of coping with what the majority expected out of them.

Fawn Posey, called Lady Posey by everybody, sighed into her glass of claret. She could only have one moderately-filled glass and sip it throughout the meal in a dignified manner. Because she was a lady. And that made her sigh.

Although she couldn't have a refill, the food was good, so she made the most of her meal. Once she had eaten her fill, Fawn sighed in contentment.

She excused herself from the table and walked up to her chambers. Fawn sighed again, for a different reason this time: this afternoon, there was going to be a tea party. And because it was hosted by Fawn herself, she was required to attend. She could rest for a while this afternoon, but she'd have to get up again to get ready for tea. It was tiresome, although she had maids to help.

Fawn thought she'd either be bored or attacked by social anxiety during the tea party. Her introversion would ensure it was one or the other. Since being adopted by the Poseys, she had attended a few tea parties and found that everyone was too busy being polite to have any fun. Actually, that described aristocratic life in general, although the luxuries made up for it.

Aurelia Posey, her adoptive mother, had warned her: Fawn might find that people whispered about her and made snide remarks because of her commoner birth. Actually, it was similar to the setup of a heroine in a romance fantasy novel, except this was real life (as far as Fawn knew) and there was no plot, just endless boredom because she had no friends.

Tea parties weren't the way to make friends, Fawn reflected, while her maids fastened her gown (a mass of frills) and did her hair (also in a mass of frills thanks to a curler). Nobody opened up at a tea party. Maybe because of the lack of booze.

She doubted this tea party would be any different. She took her place at the table. As she waited for the ladies she'd invited to arrive, Fawn surveyed the spread: finger sandwiches, fruit tarts, bite-sized cakes, three different kinds of tea and a cold cherry decant.

Well, at least she'd enjoy the food.

And yet, there were those basic roles. There's always an enemy out there set to eliminate any royals as a means to strip a layer of control away. A young witch was hired to do this very task, but not because she wished to do it. Society deemed that all witches are to use their magic for trickery and any other heinous acts that were viewed as vile. What else was their magic good for? It was created to incite chaos! At least, that's what everyone around her believed.

Hazzle didn't buy into that rubbish. While a few pranks are good and fun, poisoning people is going way too far in her mind. In order to graduate from college, however, this 'final' was necessary. Use your most potent potion and get rid of society's greatest menace; a royal family member. Get-rid-of. Surely they meant to kill, but to Hazzle 'Get rid of' had several loop holes that could be argued. If they wanted her to kill the royal, they should've just flippin said so!

Therefore her aim wasn't to kill, but to incapacitate and kidnap. She needed a thrall anyway. What better than someone she could manipulate the public with? Yes, this was far better than murder! With a smile hidden away through a polyjuice potion, a brew used to give a false appearance to the consumer, she waited with all these gussied up chicks for the best opportunity to slip that little vile that'd put her victim to sleep.

The invited ladies arrived and Fawn took care to greet each one. Better to make a good impression even if she came off as eager to please.

"There's elderberry, earl grey and peppermint, in choice of teas," she said, pointing out the teapots. "And there's cherry decant if you're not feeling up to hot tea sitting outside on a summer's day. That's what I'm having." She smiled, lifting her dainty cup to quivering lips. She was nervous, and it would annoy her indeed if she was too nervous to enjoy all the food.

She set down her cup and looked around. The ladies were already murmuring to themselves, with occasional half-glances her way, and she thought with some dismay that since they already knew each other that was another barrier to her socialising.

She turned to her nearest neighbour, a lady whose cup was placed next to hers, and said, "Hello! I'd like to introduce myself. I'm Fawn Posey." She hoped the lady would introduce herself in return. Although Fawn had hand-written the tea party invitations, she knew the names of the ladies she had invited but not the faces.
