Magic: The Gathering

I recently got into Magic because of some friends who introduced it to me last weekend. Unfortunately, I haven't exactly figured out how to play it around here because I don't know anyone around me who plays casually, and going to a comic book store or something to play with people who have been playing for years is slightly incredibly intimidating.

First off I am still learning, and I'm not sure exactly how to build decks. I'm slightly OCD and have bought lots so that I can start to build a deck instead of just using an intro deck once i get used to it, but I just don't really know how to start if that makes any sense.

Please be slow and understanding with me, I am still learning but I find the game fascinating and would love to learn more about it.

Reserved for Deck Preferences

If you want to be able to find other people who use similar decks or want to know more about a new kind of deck, I can put up people's preference of decks.

I don't play MTG much anymore, but it's a fairly simple game in my mind-at it's core.

You're a wizard and you use magic to summon things :D (Except they use the word planeswalker)

I've only made one semi-good deck so far. And that was an easy deck to make. SLIVERS! SLIVERS EVERYWHERE! XD

Airina 04-23-2012 01:45 PM

Thanks for the vote of confidence. Its also hard because no one that I know around me plays. I was visiting some friends out of state who taught me how to play.

Ducky 04-23-2012 01:58 PM

I got introduced to magic a couple of months back, and I'm now completely addicted. I have at least two meet-ups for it a week with 6-12 people. I would consider myself fairly competent, yet a lot of the more complex card combos and mechanics fly right over my head fairly regularly.

I run 3 different decks at the moment, and have plans for at least 3 others when i get the money to buy individual cards :D

if you have steam, i would recommend downloading the demo for the 'Duel of the planeswalkers 2012' game. you can set your difficulty as new to the game, and it will teach you a fair amount. for a free demo, is certainly worth it.

Sje haas a mac so that doesn't really work sadly.

Ducky 04-23-2012 02:22 PM

Oh, there's no Mac version for it? :/ that's pretty lame. I would have thought it was quite a simple game and easy enough to port onto Mac.

Renata 04-23-2012 02:25 PM

last i knew they didn't hit macs at all.

Airina 04-23-2012 02:32 PM

I should check that I guess. But I dont think that it does.

Ducky 04-23-2012 02:36 PM

MTG has an official youtbe channel, and there's some pretty helpful turorials on there.

It may seem pretty simplistic and obvious what they're teaching, but they helped me out a lot.

Airina 04-23-2012 02:40 PM

I saw those on the magic website. I need to go over it still. And just checked Steam does not have any Magic games for Mac.

Ducky 04-23-2012 03:15 PM

If you were to build a deck from scratch, what color/s would you go for? Also, any ideas on what sort of direction you'd like it to go?

Airina 04-23-2012 03:16 PM

None right now. I just finished cataloguing all of my cards. And putting them in a binder so i didn't have them flying everywhere in my room. And the idea for the colors is green white blue. i think....

Ducky 04-23-2012 03:21 PM

My card collection is pretty much just sitting on my floor in piles of colour. I make so many different decks that it's inconvenient for me to have them stored in any way. Just quick access to anything i need on the floor <3

If you're just starting I would recommend going for a mono coloured deck as your first venture into deck building, and then once you've had a bit of time to get use to it you can introduce a second colour, or a third if you're that confident.
I personally have yet to get to the point where i feel like i could pull off making a 3 coloured deck. that's with 2-3 months of regular play Dx

Airina 04-23-2012 03:24 PM

Its just that I feel like mono colored decks can get to be really cheap and frustrating for whoever i am playing with.

Ducky 04-23-2012 03:31 PM

I wouldn't say that's true at all. there's absolutely nothing wrong with mono coloured from what I've seen. Plenty of the people I play against have been into magic for years and still run some mono-coloured decks.
the main issue i see with mono coloured is that it can a weakness sometimes.
say you had an all black, and they had creatures with protection from black. you're screwed.

I personally run a black/blue, blue and green.

Yokuutsu 04-23-2012 03:39 PM

Mono-colored is best for newbies, no offense. They're easier to work with.

Hell, except for my sliver deck, I do not go beyond two colors. And I've been playing for over 10 years.

But remember, mono-color doesn't limit you really. You can still have artifacts which many do not require a certain type of mana. Any will do. Also, with multi-colored decks, you might have mana problems-not having enough or not being able to get the color you need.

Airina 04-23-2012 03:41 PM

Ok thanks for the input guys.

Ducky 04-23-2012 03:49 PM

yeah, the hardest part of building a deck for me is making sure I have the correct balance of mana. Being mana starved, or the exact opposite can be a real issue. and the balance becomes harder and harder to sort out when adding extra colours.

Airina 04-23-2012 03:51 PM

That makes sense. And you just asked what kind of deck i was wanting to build in the future. Right now I'm just sticking with a green infect deck that i got. I'm gonna be slowly trying to build off of that one for now.

Ducky 04-23-2012 03:55 PM

If you're worried about being a pain to other players.. infect is a bad way to go :P It annoys a whole lot of people. We even have a rule where infect based decks aren't allowed when we play >_<

Airina 04-23-2012 04:00 PM

That's my point. That's the only monocolored deck that i have. Which is why i've been trying to figure out how to build a different deck. I love the infect deck, but the people i play with hate it, because it is really cheap, which is why i've been trying to figure something else out.

Ducky 04-23-2012 04:03 PM

infect is annoying and cheap, but that doesn't reflect on mono-coloured as a whole. It's very possible to make complex and fun decks with the one colour. It's also easily possible to make decks that can win.

I made a dual coloured infect deck once, but it even annoyed me >_<

Airina 04-23-2012 04:04 PM

I only have enough cards to make a green monocolored deck and most of my cards are infect and at the moment i dont have the money to get more.

Obbiesan 04-23-2012 04:21 PM

I have a mono red deck that can do 20 damage in one turn /swag XD

Ducky 04-23-2012 04:33 PM

I have a deck that accidentally made 176 4/4 zombie tokens >_> It's not even designed to generate them.

Obbiesan 04-23-2012 04:35 PM

Thats awesome ducky X3 i have a deck that mills its self can i can have a 46/46 creature and heal a for about 40-60 life in a turn it everything is right ^_^

Ducky 04-23-2012 04:37 PM

I'm working on a zombie token generation deck to improve on that accidental 174 zombies XD If i actually base a full deck around it, who knows how many i can get.
it will also have the ability to cast any creature for 4 mana from the graveyard on the 4th turn. So i could get something pretty massive out damn fast 8D

Obbiesan 04-23-2012 04:49 PM

Thst sounds awesome i cant wait for the new set i wanna build a deck around the new angel

Ducky 04-23-2012 05:06 PM

I pre-order an entire booster box for the new set O_O Finally going to get around to building a white-based deck. from what i've seen from the leaked cards it's going to be a very interesting set.

Airina 04-23-2012 05:14 PM

When is the release date?

Ducky 04-23-2012 05:16 PM

I believe it's on the 4th of May. There will be pre-release events and such on the 28th of this month though.

Airina 04-23-2012 05:27 PM

Ok thanks! I shall put that on the front page. What is the release called?
