2024 Reading Challenge
hello again!!!
i set myself a reading challenge every year, which is to read more books than the previous year. 2017 was the first year i did this on Trisphee, (i had a great time! thanks Moonshadow!) and i've been hosting this since 2018. it's great fun ... so here we are again! so, (snagging from previous threads), set a challenge for yourself: read 50 books, read only the books you have at home that you haven't read yet, read a specific genre, read only non-fiction books... whatever you choose. Your first post should contain your challenge, and use a spoiler to indicate how you are progressing in meeting that challenge. i use a spoiler for my booklist. =) And while we're reading, please feel free to chat about books, your day, anything! if you ever have any questions, go ahead and post it. the only silly question is the one you don't ask. :D https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/03...g?v=1411837338 |

reserved... just 'cause it's good to have another post reserved. as soon as i don't reserve one, i'll need it for something.... right, Murphy? XD
(and as long as i keep reserving a post that i don't need, i won't need it. right?) |
my reading challenge: in 2023, i read 48 books - my goal is to read more than that!
for my information: |
Oof, how is it already another year?
My challenge this year will be 60 books. The library has a 50 book challenge for adults this year (with a separate prize for staff even!) so 50 for that, plus 10 not part of it. |

and yay! another person in the reading challenge! :D |
Heck yeah, can't miss another challenge!
|
woo hoo!
and now i'm up to book #2 already. just need to update my sig and my post XD |
Finished one book yesterday and have a handful at home that are either about 1/2 done or are really small.
|
oh yay! :D
|
I really have to stop just checking books out because they look good. I have too many at home already. Lol
Just checked out another last night. |
nah, check them out. you can always renew them, right? ;)
|
I mean...yeah, but only twice. And I also have an Etsy shop to maintain so I don't really have as much time as I could otherwise for reading...lol.
And also only if the books don't have holds. And almost 100% of what I have are new books, so are likely to have holds when I need thw renew. xP |
yeah, i get that about new books. i try to make sure i get new books read before the due date... but the library is also fine-free... so... yeah ;)
|
Same really. And in reality, most of the books I have aren't that popular so I doubt they'll have holds on them unless booktok and bookstagram suddenly shifts from spicy romantasies to just straight modern fantasy anyway.
|
yeah, i get that.
i have a series on my to-read list that's a paperback series, the Wishcraft series - the last book is from 2019, so i doubt people are suddenly going to be reading it XD but my new books are Dirty Thirty from Janet Evanovich, and another Patricia Briggs book out this year. and the last two books in the latest Warriors series |
Yeah, my new books are Bookshops & Bonedust, the prequel novel to Legends & Lattes, so I know that's a popular one, then I have a newish Brandon Sanderson that might not be popular yet, but will probably get popular becauase it's Sanderson. But it also might be old enough by now that the craze has died down, idk.
And then I have the second book in the Unorthodox Cronicles by James J. Butcher, which probably won't have any holds ever. I think the first book was severely underrated, but it's urban fantasy with, so far, no "spice", so that's ultimately unsurprising. And then I have two new thriller/horror books and those are always hit or miss for how in demand/popular they end up. And then I have 2 assorted not new fiction and 2 craft books. |
wow, that's a few books!
|
I also definitely forgot a couple others that I didn't have sitting with the rest of the checkouts too... ;>.>
Did return the look knitting books and tbh will probably just buy one of them as there were too many patterns I wanted, but still have too many books. xD This is why I say I shouldn't check things out, lol. |
LOL, i get that!
i have a book out that's next on my pile to read that has rituals for the various sabbats on the Wheel of the Year (Samhain, Yule, Beltane).... and something tells me that I'll probably want to buy a copy of it for myself! XD |
The old try it before you buy it. Libraries are great for that.
|
yep, that's exactly it. :D
libraries are... enablers! XD |
read a few books and updated my list back on page 1.
|
did more reading, and now goodreads says I'm like 8 books ahead of schedule to meet my goal o_O
|
I keep forgetting to update goodreads. xP
...and my list here... lol |
i update goodreads and instagram. i forget to post here XD
|
Just gonna say, Goodread's page counts always being off bothers me. I know it's copy specific probably and impossible to keep up with all that, but...my current book is WAY off. (Possibly has the page count for the original Japanese text instead of the English translation.)
Goodreads: 220 pages Literal book in my hands: 315 pages |
i don't pay attention to that, actually.
i just use it to keep track of my books. |
I like watching the percent read go up. If the page count is off by 10-30, it's not an issue or if it's higher than the page count of the book copy I have, it still works.
Even this one, being almost 100 pages under on GR is mostly just a minor annoyance. Like, it's not the end of the world or anything, though it will make the end of year stats fairly inaccurate. Which is also just a minor annoyance, but still... XP |
everyone's different. i like the book count going up. XD
|
I got the His Dark Materials trilogy from Amazon and was so excited to read the whole series before watching HBO's show. I'm almost halfway through The Golden Compass. It's a shame the movies got cancelled because of religious groups taking offense. It's fictional, for crying out loud.
|
haven't seen the Golden Compass, but i think i heard something about people getting offended. yeesh.
I'm still reading Cold Curses, I'm about halfway through. |
updated my lists... i've read 22 books so far. goodreads says I'm now 8 books ahead of schedule to meet my goal of (at least) 49 books.
|
updated my list again. i'm up t #25, and I'm more than half way through. I'm off to the library tomorrow to get two, maybe three, books. i have a book in transit - The Fae Keeper (sequel to The Witch King) - that might be there tomorrow too. o_O
|
it's been a minute, and i've updated my list. I'm reading book #30 for the year! yay! :D
|
Have not been updating my list here...I'll have to go through goodreads and get that updated soon...but I am at 26/50 books down on the reading challenge for the library, so probably closer to 40 books total read.
|
it's okay, i have to update my list. I'm up to reading #38. last year i read 48, so i'm getting there.
|
Nice! That's pretty good progress!
I'm currently at 45 books total, but probably 10-ish of them were graphic novels, so I could read several in a day. Gonna try to finish a couple in the next week before the Ravellenic games start since I decided to actually get active on Ravelry again and participate this year. |
thanks!
nothing wrong with graphic novels, a few (4?) years ago i (re?)read all of Sandman, which are, erm, collected trade paperbacks- each book collects 8-12 issues of the Sandman comic. yay for the Ravellenic games! i've been part of Team Crochet Shoulder Wrappers since 2016,so says the graphics i put on my profile page |
I like graphic novels because they're super quick reads.
Yeah...I meant to do the Ravellenics like...7+ years ago when I was last attempting to be active on Rav., but it never happened. I'm not attempting very much: a Loom-A-Long scarf for the WIP event (because it starts at midnight), and a short pair of dragon scales fingerless gloves mainly. And if the eyes arrive in time and I think I can manage it, a mothman plushie. |
