Martian's Fly-In Theater (A Movie Hangout) [Totes Open]

https://i.ibb.co/z4cXF3W/1-Xque-G6-RTy-resize-64.jpg

So yeah I'm opening a movie hangout. This is where I'd like to talk about movies. We can have conversations about them or just recommend some good flicks. Any genre is accepted.

Regardless of if this takes off or not, I will have a Reccomended Watch list below this post that I will try (probably in vain) to update with a variety of flicks some of you might enjoy. I will try to display as much info as possible so you can be well informed.

Also you can recommend movies in a post or DM me and I will happily put your recommendation(s) in the Recommended post.

Let's what else...
I would like to try and avoid TV shows but I dont think I saw a thread for them so what the hell. Again any genre. Foreign or domestic.

Gosh I think that's it really. Maybe some fellow movie fanatics will find this hangout fun idk

Hello,

I remember enjoying Wristcutters long ago, but should probably watch it again.

My movie watching has slowed down quite a bit because it's been a struggle to find something that might be worth watching. I do have many old favorites though.

DreadedMartian 08-13-2019 01:11 AM

Yeah I have been working so much lately it's hard to fit time in for just watching movies. Especially when you want something good. But I have stumbled upon some pretty good gems (in my opinion) lately.

Biomecha 08-13-2019 01:39 AM

Are they the ones in your list?

Do you have a methodology for finding what to watch? I used to keep up with things like film blogs and various rating sites, but got burned out keeping track of everything.

DreadedMartian 08-13-2019 03:56 AM

Yes the first one on the list. I still have more to add. And as far as a method goes I really dont know. I've thought about it and honestly I wing it. If I want to look more into the movie I'll do some research but thats mainly after I've seen it. I try to stay away from trailers because I feel like sometimes they air out the whole movie and ruin it. And sites like rotten tomatoe are just unreliable in my opinion.

Merskelly Metalien 08-13-2019 01:36 PM

Pops in after watching Clue.

Sorry, didn't mean to fright you all. >u>;

Biomecha 08-13-2019 08:03 PM

Ah, I might give that one a try.

Yeah, Rotten Tomatoes isn't really helpful. Ones like Letterboxd have user contributed lists that can be handy.

mdom 08-13-2019 08:39 PM

I only watched Wristcutters because of Gogol Bordello |D I'm shameless like that.

Recently I (finally) watched Billy Elliot.

Biomecha 08-13-2019 08:46 PM

Have you seen Everything Is Illuminated? With the singer from Gogol.

mdom 08-13-2019 08:53 PM

Hehe I watched it in the movies because a friend was going to (that was back at uni when I lived in a big city and there were indie movie theaters) and I liked the songs so much I ended up becoming a fan of the band and a couple years later I went to the their show!

Also I'm an Elijah fan. I try to watch all of his movies.

say 08-13-2019 10:32 PM

if rabb.it was still working you could have proper trisphee movie nights lol

DreadedMartian 08-14-2019 03:04 AM

No I haven't seen Everything is Illuminated but once I looked I up the trailer I was immediately intrigued! Its looks quirky and funny but heartfelt. I'll be sure to add it to the recommended list.

Also I love Elijah Wood. He is actually a really good actor. He played in a brutal horror movie called Maniac, where he played the killer. It was a gruesome movie but I was really impressed with how awesome he did in that role. I won't be recommending that particular movie though lol far too macabre.

Biomecha 08-14-2019 05:14 PM

Would you like more recommendations? I could make a list. Not that it should be added to the post.

DreadedMartian 08-17-2019 09:39 AM

of course! Just personal recommendations are always nice

Stabbsworth 08-17-2019 11:20 AM

i mean, it's possible to do a screenshare on a discord, but that'd require getting a large amount of us together, in a single discord server or group chat, and you can only fit ten users into a screenshare on discord. they might toy with the limit later, maybe.

Biomecha 08-17-2019 09:54 PM

Just...a few suggestions, you've probably seen many of these.

KittyBeary 08-17-2019 10:42 PM

I recently got the movie called Okko's Inn and I hope to watch it tonight! <3

Also I should finish Pom Poko at some point. >w> It's alright...

DreadedMartian 08-17-2019 11:02 PM

Damn Biomecha, first of all that format is perfection. Second, while your right I have seen some there are a few I haven't and I'm stoked to have more to watch!!

KityyBeary I actually love Love LOVE Okko's Inn, but I'm a softy for animations like this so
d(・ω・`)

Biomecha 08-18-2019 04:23 PM

It's been a while since I have seen most of them, so I'm not sure how well they may hold up.

DreadedMartian 08-18-2019 06:32 PM

You know the age of a movie has never bothered me. In fact the older the better. It just amazes me how far technology has come. So no worries they hold up fine for me.

Got any favorite black and white movies?

Biomecha 08-18-2019 07:34 PM

Girl on the Bridge is actually black and white. Just more modern, obviously. I could never really get into classics for some reason. It might be the acting style. They're my father's favorite, though. To the point that he loved filling out their pages in the early days of IMDb. We got to see theater showing of Metropolis which was nice.

DreadedMartian 08-18-2019 09:40 PM

Omg Metropolis lmfao that era of acting style was so over the top lol I dont know why but I love it so much.

Biomecha 08-19-2019 10:08 PM

Have you seen Le Samouraï? It's in color, but it was the director's first one that wasn't black and white. I haven't seen it yet, but keep meaning to because it had a strong influence on Ghost Dog.

DreadedMartian 08-20-2019 04:22 AM

I've heard of discord but never used it. I'm gonna Google what it is exactly cause I really dont know lol

Why dont you tell us some of your favorite movies Void.

@Biomecha: I have not seen Le Samourai,But I definitely saw Ghost Dog. Please let me know how it is when you watch it!
Apparently The Killer (with Jon Woo) was also influenced by Le Samouri and that was a pretty good watch too.

mdom 08-20-2019 10:21 AM

> We got to see theater showing of Metropolis which was nice.
>

wow, someone's showing her age!!

those old movies did have a different accent and way of a talking, but maybe in 50 years the youth will say the same of 90s movies xD

Biomecha 08-20-2019 12:03 PM

I'm sending you the medical bill for having to get that sick burn treated.

DreadedMartian 08-20-2019 02:49 PM

Mdom You ain't wrong about that. I'm mean 80's style movies are booming right now.

Den 08-30-2019 01:14 AM

In terms of movies, I like sci-fi, and mild horror (Shaun of the Dead, "I Walked with a Zombie", "Day of the Dead" type stuff), and comedy (but more the warped comedy of stuff like "Arsenic and Old Lace")

DreadedMartian 08-31-2019 03:10 PM

Firstly Den, Welcome!
And it seems like we have similar tastes!
I love Shaun of the Dead! Have you ever seen Walking With the Deceased??

Den 08-31-2019 11:09 PM

I have not, but now I know what I'mma watch at Halloween (we don't really get trick-or-treaters around here, so I don't have to watch the door. Might as well watch appropriate movies for the holiday.)

DreadedMartian 09-01-2019 12:06 AM

Sounds like my area. Never get any trick or treaters but I still decorate and buy the candy lol I know already I have to work on Halloween, buuut I think I'll still be able to sneak in some good flicks.

So out of your preferences, which do you like more?

Den 09-02-2019 09:24 PM

Honestly? It's hard to choose a favorite. All of the ones I've used as examples are ones I'd gladly watch again and again.

DreadedMartian 09-04-2019 04:21 PM

@Den : Hey I like that answer alot. I think having more than one favorite is allowed lol

Have you ever seen any of the other movies from from Edgar Wright? They have a trilogy called The Cornetto Trilogy that includes The Worlds End, Hott Fuzz along with Shaun of the Dead. Wright wanted to have fun with a few genres of movie and this was the result. Movies with great laughs and actually interesting stories.

Den 09-04-2019 09:26 PM

The only one of those I haven't seen is The World's End.

DreadedMartian 09-05-2019 02:32 PM

Honestly IMP it was the weaker of the 3. But still funny as hell! Gosh I wish we could actually like watch movies here it would be so much easier lol

Den 09-05-2019 08:20 PM

Oh! Another movie that I will happily watch over and over: Transformers: The Movie (1986 version, not the Michael Bay stuff, for various reasons) and Road to El Dorado (the animated one)

DreadedMartian 09-07-2019 12:47 AM

*Dramatic Gasp*

OMFG The OG Transformers are my faaaav!
And since you said Road to El Derado, what about Atlantis :The Lost Empire?!

Den 09-07-2019 09:48 PM

I haven't seen that one yet, it's on my list of to-watch!
