@ Antigone, you earn them when you interact with other people's pokemon. I have no idea how much you get though. Another way to get more is to get the Pokewalker and earn Watts while interacting with other people's Pokemon and then using the Watts to find items and then sell the items.

I never really learned how to sound out words... I just memorized how a lot of words would sound, and I try to just combine them, not using individual letters.

Generally, I could read words before I could pronounce them. I knew the word "epitome" for about ten years before I stopped reading it as "eppi-tome" and realized it was "ep-i-to-mee". xD
