"If he were just lines of code, we could rewrite him." Ben replied pointedly. "But he's like a living thing in cyberspace."
"A real person who they rewrote like a code," Kris sighed. "And the real person is showing thr... Chris, don't let her eat that, she hasn't eaten dinner yet!"
"Aww, c'mon!" Chris whined in the back. "She likes it."
"Focus, please!" Ben snapped. |
"He's feeding oreos to Summer!" Kris snapped. "I already told you where to check for Wyatt- what do you want me to do, call Pin's mother and have her see if he's there!?"
"There's an idea." Ben replied before he took the phone from Haru and hung up. "Those two are impossible."
"They're better parents then any parents I know," Haru admitted grimly, before he blushed and looked away. "Um... I guess I'll... leave you be..."
He wanted to go. He wanted to make sure Wyatt was okay... but he wasn't sure it was his right to ask. He'd already invaded Ben's privacy and Wyatt was a very private person... having Haru suddenly show up would feel like an invasion. |
"Can you drive?" Ben asked.
The dark-jaired boy jumped a little in surprise. "Hai. Aa... Yes. I have a car."
"Then I need you to take me to our friend." Ben replied. "I have neither the experience nor the vehicle."
"Our...." Haru repeated, his cheeks pink once more. He slowly nodded. "Okay... is it this hospital just across the road?"
"That would be the same one." Ben nodded before grabbing Haru's arm to make him hurry along.
Haru stumbled behind him, shoving his phone into his pocket.
It was raining, but neither of them had coats. His car was parked in the parking lot near the back - he wasn't the kind to fight for a space, so they were soaked by the time they got into the seats. It was a cheep SUV... his dad had bought him an expensive one and he'd traded it in for something cheep and used the rest of the money to donate a bunch of food to a homeless shelter for abused wives and their children. He felt it was a wonderful way of sticking it to his father without actually doing it. He started it up and bucked his seat belt, pushing his long hair out of his face. |
Ben breathed into his hands to warm up his icy fingers and then adjusted the heat on the console before he leaned his hand close to the vent.
Watching him for a moment, Haru then leaned across the other and buckled his seat belt for him, trying to ignore the shot of warmth that flew through his body as they touched.
"Safety first," He joked lamely, before checking his mirrors and pulling out of the parking space. |
"Refrain from molesting me in your car." Ben replied dryly.
Haru turned to look at him with wide eyes, his face red. "What!? I didn't- I'm not- I-!"
"Eyes on the road!" Ben said in alarm- gripping the dashboard.
"...Ben, I'm still in the parking lot," Haru pointed out.
He was, in fact - he had pulled out, but they hadn't moved yet. |
"There are more accidents in parking lots each year, especially among high schoolers and college students. Ben said matter-of-factly. "And why haven't we started moving?"
"Sorry," Haru mumbled, starting to pull out carefully.
He kept his eyes on the road the whole time and stopped with just the right amount of time at red lights and stop signs... Ben found that there was nothing he could complain about when it came to Haru's driving. The younger boy paid for parking and found a space on the second level - there was a bridge leading from the parking lot to the second floor of the hospital, so they wouldn't have to cross the street. He climbed out and waited for Ben, before locking the car. |
"Will anyone steal it?" Ben asked as he walked past Haru.
"I hope not," Haru admitted, pocketing his keys. "What floor are we going to?"
"The third." Ben replied. "You can follow me to the room, but then you shouldn't involve."
"Okay," Haru agreed as they started across the bridge, before heading toward the stairs.
"Elevators are risky." Ben explained after a long moment of silence on the stairs.
"I know," Haru agreed, shaking his head. "I don't like them... too many risks."
"Even more when your enemy is a computer program connected to the world wide web." Ben nodded as the came to their floor and stepped out.
Haru remained quiet, following Ben as he headed down the hall and to the correct room.
"Just wait here and I'll be right back out." Ben assured as he opened the door gently.
Haru nodded and took a seat in a chair outside of the room, nervously looking around.
Not to Ben's surprise, Wyatt was in fact in the room in question, laying on the bed beside the unmoving person. He had a TGS hooked up to a laptop beside him, which was connected to the hospital's free WiFi. It was hard to tell, but he was awake, although a pro at not moving while playing The Game - something that not a lot of people were masters at. |
Ben sighed and moved over- tapping on the headset.
It took a few moments and another tap before Wyatt swatted at his hand.
"Now." Ben said firmly. "I'm sopping wet, exhausted and frustrated."
There was another pause, before Wyatt reached up and disconnected his head set, blinking against the light - even the little bit that was coming in through the curtains - and turning to look Ben over. "You look like hell."
Ben looked like he was about to take offense before he sighed and slumped a bit.
"...I know." He replied. "Your boyfriend has something to do with that." |
Wyatt's eyes went wide. "Did you just... admit that he's actually in there!?"
"I'll admit that you're infatuated with it." Ben clarified. "But I would know...that is not the person you wish it to be."
"...Did you walk here?" Wyatt asked - obviously an attempt to change the subject.
"I had help...someone to drive." Ben offered before moving over and sitting down in Wyatt's wheelchair.
"Who?" Wyatt inquired. "Not to sound rude, Ben, but... you don't exactly have a posse of friends jumping up to give you a ride."
He sat up and leaned back against the wall, careful not to knock into the person beside him. |
