I'm not familiar with anything Pokemon related in Japanese. It didn't even occur to me that the names were different when I first encountered them.

A few pokemon kept their name but all the characters had name changes

Ash - Satoshi
Brock - Takeshi

Ah. Well, "Ash" does feel like a feasible nickname for "Satoshi." I guess they tried to get something earthy sounding for Brock, what with the rock/ground types and all.

actually a lot of it is to help with pacing XD

You mean like matching up the dialogue with the animated mouth movements?

littl3chocobo 12-07-2012 09:13 PM

pretty much, yeah, a lot of cartoons are butchered when transitioning over from anime

So I've noticed. I've started watching some shows either unedited or in original Japanese and entire episodes of stuff gets cut out. I was reading stuff on TV tropes and occasional would come across an explanation for a line that sounded really odd in the dubbed versions. I understand them now! Sometimes.

littl3chocobo 12-07-2012 10:59 PM

i generally preferr the original language for things, sure i have to read more and see less but there is a lot less lost in translation

It varies for me, and tend to have to do with what versions that I've watched first. I don't mind reading subtitles but usually it's the voices that get me, especially if they sound radically different from what I'm used to.

I still wish I could get the translated version of Akira. I got the re-released version with what it apparently the original dialogue before it was changed when it was brought over to the US in the 80's (I think) but I find I prefer the dubbed dialogue and voices over the original. It seems more philosophical to me.

ah, fair enough

I normally prefer the original over the eng dub.. but some eng dubs are pretty good .. I find I prefer Viz and Funimation dubs over anything else xp but sometimes they can't do a good job

The Record of Lodoss war (the original one I think) dubs were really good. We watched half of the series in subtitles and half in English dub because that's what was available and they did a pretty good job of matching the voices and pitches of the Japanese voice actors. It wasn't perfect of course, because Asian and Western voices have different tones not matter what, but it was one one of the best efforts I've seen at it. They even translated the song at the end of every episode and seem to have done a good job of it. It was fun to have an anime song that we could sing. :)

It's finally getting a little festive feeling. I like that. I keep thinking of changing my avy to something Christmasy but I never get around to it. I don't mind staring at Rodent for a while I guess.
