and when would be the best time to do this? i was thinking new-years but since tris does not conform to the calender there might not be as many users on as there would be if there was an event

errm, perhaps right after new years when everyone will be checking their respective websites they get on
if not that, a little late in january or in early february when everyones over the holiday rush

If you try to make a fantastic giveaway like that coincide with one of the site's events, wouldn't the event overshadow it? Like you just mentioned, a user-run event would provide a better venue for it.

it might, but the giveaway was off-season for tris and it was pretty dead ^^: i gave away like a dozen items and a bit of gold, not much
