Quiet Man - i looked for quotes from Fellowship of the Ring on goodreads, so i'd like to figure they're from the book. for movie quotes, i like to use imdb =)

Kaderin Triste 04-19-2019 12:02 AM

Tbh, now I really do want to re-read the Fellowship of the Ring. I haven't actually read it since probably high school. Of course then I'll want to read the rest of the book, too, but I don't think I actually have them. Although I could go get them at the library.

trystan830 04-19-2019 12:44 AM

ah very cool. i have the Hobbit and the three volumes of the Lord of the Rings. my younger daughter has the Silmarillion, and i'm debating reading that one ... eventually. =)

Quiet Man Cometh 04-19-2019 12:48 AM

My favourite part of finally getting around to reading The Hobbit, is the part where they ask the eagles for help.

The say no.

Merskelly Metalien 04-19-2019 12:54 AM

:o Ouhhhh Redwall! I remember that from grammar school! :D It was turned into an animated show on PBS kids! Only saw it in bits and pieces, but it was really good. Really cool for a kids show, and wasn't pandering to an immature audience like a lot of cartoons might have, and it had that epic intro.
<x] Maybe I'll read it all the way through if I can get my hands on a copy of it.

Quiet Man Cometh 04-19-2019 01:21 AM

The animated show is the only reason I ever knew about it.

Kaderin Triste 04-19-2019 01:24 AM

Tbh, I only found out about the show a few months ago when I was at my friend's house and saw it when we were flipping channels...
>.>
But I didn't actually get to watch it because we didn't have a lot of time before he had to go to work and we had plans to watch the latest Johnny English movie.

Merskelly Metalien 04-19-2019 01:58 AM

:D It's a good show. I'm only sad that I never got to like it when I was a kid because I didn't watch it as much as I watched other shows. :/ So I have to get to enjoy it in adulthood. x}

trystan830 04-19-2019 10:34 PM

i vaguely remember an animated version of the Hobbit when i was a kid. also probably why i knew of it before the movies came out

Kaderin Triste 04-20-2019 03:37 AM

I LOVED the animated version of The Hobbit. We also had at least part 2 of the animated Lord of the Rings. Part one was Fellowship of the Ring and the first half of Two Towers and part 2 had the rest of the books. But The Hobbit was the best.

trystan830 04-20-2019 02:17 PM

i was a kid - i didn't really know/realise what i was watching. i actually didn't realise what a lot of things were when i was younger. and i also mean when i was in my 20s, too. XD

Quiet Man Cometh 04-21-2019 03:59 AM

Rankin and Bass did cartoon versions of The Hobbit and The Return of the King, and there was also a weird sort of half-animated Lord of the Rings that went up until the battle at Helm's Deep.

trystan830 04-21-2019 03:38 PM

well that's interesting, Quiet Man

Kaderin Triste 04-22-2019 08:33 PM

I really need to get better about setting limits on my Netflix watching. And also sticking to it. Mainly because I know I could probably have made a lot of book progress yesterday but instead watched almost 50% of my Netflix downloads. (Was at around 70 unwatched episodes of various shows and anime...)

trystan830 04-22-2019 09:12 PM

whenever i'm watching something - network tv, netflix, or a show on my computer - i'm also crocheting something. right now, i'm watching Friday the 13th the Series on my laptop, and working on the blanket that's a present for my older daughter. =)

sometimes, if all factors are "right," i can crochet and read at the same time. XD

Kaderin Triste 04-22-2019 09:48 PM

I can only make things while watching stuff if it's in english. Unfortunately, I have been on a big anime kick lately and I just cannot tolerate dubbed (it just sounds so wrong), so I can't work on stuff because I only know occasional words in Japanese, so I need to be able to read the subtitles.

trystan830 04-22-2019 10:29 PM

ah... that does make sense though

Kaderin Triste 04-22-2019 11:27 PM

Lol. Does reading anime subs count as a book? XD
J/k

trystan830 04-22-2019 11:29 PM

well.... is it an anime based on a book? XD

(Ranma 1/2 comes to mind - i have some of those comic books) :)

Kaderin Triste 04-22-2019 11:40 PM

...about 98% that I've been watching are based on manga, yes. The other 2% might be, but I'm not certain...
>.>

Quiet Man Cometh 04-23-2019 12:34 AM

I've been cheating and listening to audiobooks on youtube for the various short stories I've been reading and discussion over on librarything.

I've finally abandoned kids reading to get back to The Witcher and have started Asylum of Caligari, already too amused because it starts at the New York Armory Show.

I've decided to start tracking down horror books that go with all the horror movies I watch. Did anyone read a short story called "The Lottery" in high school? It was written by Shirley Jackson, who also wrote the book The Haunting of Hill House, which the movie (and netflix series!) "The Haunting" are based on. She has a pile of books, so I'm going to start at those when I'm done with Caligari and The Witcher.

Still waiting for the film "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" to get here.

EDIT: Ha! It's on the way!

trystan830 04-23-2019 10:14 AM

hmm.... i don't know if it's a show based on a book if it counts as reading... but Quiet Man, audiobooks count as books though.

and YES, i've read The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. loved it!

Kaderin Triste 04-23-2019 02:26 PM

Lol, I definitely wasn't serious. I'm so strict with myself, that I don't count audio books because it's a reading challenge, not a listening one. But that's just me. Others can count audio books if they want.
XD

trystan830 04-23-2019 02:37 PM

i knew you weren't serious about the anime. i mean, if that was the case, i could have watched the BBC miniseries for War & Peace and said "i read the book." XD

i mean, i read an awesome translation of War & Peace, and then watched the BBC mini as my reward for finishing the book. it also helped that i was familiar with the musical Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 (generally shortened to The Great Comet), which is taken literally from the middle of War & Peace, with some pieces from other parts that make it more fun. like the Duel. XD

Kaderin Triste 04-23-2019 02:57 PM

Pshhhh...only if it's not in english and you read the subtitles. XD
Lol

trystan830 04-23-2019 03:38 PM

fair enough... LOL

well, does British English with captioning count? British English IS different than American English XD

Quiet Man Cometh 04-24-2019 11:02 PM

I don't count the audiobooks, but they're short stories anyway. However, I might count this anthology I picked up from the library today. ;)

trystan830 04-25-2019 12:25 AM

in the end, it's up to you to determine what counts, yeah?

what anthology did you get, Quiet Man?

Quiet Man Cometh 04-25-2019 03:46 AM

I was looking for a book copy of "The King in Yellow" by Robert Chambers and part of it is in they anthology "Horror Stories: Classic Tales from Hoffman to Hodgson." So I picked up that.

trystan830 04-25-2019 11:07 AM

ooh cool.

i've finished my Warriors book, and am now starting in on the Murdoch Mysteries books. =)

Quiet Man Cometh 04-25-2019 10:48 PM

Like the cats? I've seen some others around. I have the first copy of The Seekers but haven't ever gotten around to reading it so I'm passing it on. I'm guess the bears weren't as popular as the cats. Not sure what the dogs are up to. And, there's a fourth somewhere? Lions?

trystan830 04-25-2019 11:19 PM

yep, Warrior cats.

there's also Seekers (bears), Survivors (dogs), and Bravelands (animals of the African plains)

Quiet Man Cometh 05-13-2019 04:16 AM

I got a book of poetry from the library. I was not expecting a large, hardcover book. Apparently it's by the former Poet Laureate of the United States. I just liked the title.

trystan830 05-13-2019 09:32 AM

so what was the title?

i'm currently re-reading The Two Towers while i wait for a Murdoch Mystery from the library

Kaderin Triste 05-13-2019 02:55 PM

Yikes, I've been slacking on reading again. XP
I think I've only read 1 chapter in the last month... maybe tonight I'll read before bed instead of just watch Netflix for 4 hours. Lol

trystan830 05-13-2019 02:56 PM

LOL, sounds like a plan then. =)

Kaderin Triste 05-13-2019 05:32 PM

I mean...knowing me, I won't actually follow through with that plan....
But it is a good plan. Lol

trystan830 05-13-2019 05:57 PM

i come up with lots of good plans. sometimes i even follow through with them XD
