I vaguely remember there being a list or two back when you asked some time ago? I think?

Gallagher 11-11-2019 01:17 PM

shrugs

i don't have anything saved, so it doesn't matter

I mean, if I did this myself I'd go far beyond that. I've studied heraldry, so I'd use that experience to enable all sorts of flag designs.

* (color) Heraldic Flag (just one pose)
* (color) Heraldic Bar (horizontal, 12 poses)
* (color) Heraldic Bend (diagonal, 8 poses -- two widths of line, plus top and bottom halves, for each diagonal)
* (color) Heraldic Pale (vertical, 12 poses)
* (color) Heraldic Canton (4 poses, one for each of the four quarters of the flag)

There are several other blazons that could be used to describe a flag or shield design, but a lot of them can be made by layering these -- bordure, for example, can be done with bars and pales.

I'd consider some charges, too, but that could easily explode, and of course the whole thing suffers the problem that you multiply everything by the number of positions you want to be able to pose the flag in. Which... really suggests something more like Minecraft's banner editor rather than trying to do it all in the avatar layering. But that's a whole separate can of worms to get into...

Gallagher 11-11-2019 01:24 PM

i definitely wouldn't mind exploring the potential for a line of items like that for ultimate customization options. the only snag is i'd want the individual pieces to work as standalone items as well, which may or may not make things trickier. the idea of it goes well with posting rewards though, as somewhat minimalist background/border/prop decor

Stabbsworth 11-11-2019 01:29 PM

that'd be really nice. idk if you'd be able to get it to work w/ the current avatar layering system, but it's a neat idea that could use some exploration tbh.

Coda 11-11-2019 02:27 PM

I mean, it would be easy to get it to work with the current avatar system. It would just be clumsy with a zillion layers for a single item. That kind of thing tends to motivate engineers to come up with better ideas. :P

Gallagher 11-11-2019 02:37 PM

i mean, i am trying to think of the most elegant way to do it with the current system, because it's rather my job to try and make ideas work with what we got, but i doubt i would complain if coda did make stuff for more customize abilities.

we actually might have somewhere to slot in a release like this in the item schedule, but i won't say when in case things don't get figured out in an acceptable manner by then.

Stabbsworth 11-11-2019 03:28 PM

that's valid, gallagher.

Stabbsworth 11-11-2019 08:40 PM

actual item idea: broken glasses.

littl3chocobo 11-11-2019 10:02 PM

coda has an idea there. solid bands of colour that the user can mix and match at will with maybe five or six nontris coloured bg chunks that cover the whole 'flag' area so those sections can be left blank

Mekatra 11-11-2019 10:10 PM

Oh man I love heraldic devices! Yes, I so much support this idea!

littl3chocobo 11-11-2019 10:12 PM

could you have been any cuter with how you said that? XD

Espy 11-12-2019 02:43 AM

Heraldry is also an interest of mine, tbh.

sorry to be *that* overeager person, but it's not 'if' but 'when'? :f-happy:

Gallagher 11-12-2019 06:25 AM

yes, it's 'when' rather than 'if' because this isn't a situation questioning whether or not it can be done, it's one questioning the best way to do it.
