With Hitchhiker's I don't think there really are any surprises. I love re-reading them because no matter how many times I read stuff written by Douglas Adams, it's hilarious. In fact, it gets more hilarious the more I read stuff like

"Ford... You're turning into a penguin. Stop it."

I don't know how something can get more funny like that, but Douglas Adams and Monty Python are the only ones who really do that to me. xD

I loved that scene in the book, it was like an acid trip on paper, not that I would no what an acid trip is like anyway.
I loved the bowl of petunias and how Arthur kept killing him.

I also love pokemon with an intense passion. anyone who hates pokemon is dead to me. D:<

I always imagined that I would one day meet my husband in this scenario:
I am sitting outside on campus, playing Pokemon, and some guy walks up to me and asks, "what'cha playing?" "HeartGold," I answer him, and he replies, "No way, I have SoulSilver! wanna trade? battle?" and we fall in love and get married and have little pokemon-loving babies.

Hermes 08-30-2010 11:26 PM

My gf and I met over a pokemon roleplay guild and shiz XD

Also... I found something I have to compare to an acid trip even though I've never done it, either..

I loved all of the book.

If I could hope to write like anyone, I'd want to write like Douglas Adams. He was so amazingly intelligent and hilarious.

Hermes 08-30-2010 11:29 PM

I tried writing something like it once, it was more fantasy based, with a teen werewolf, his older adopted Frankenstein like sister (she actually looked younger), a vampire with a weak stomach to the sight of blood, and a train that would randomly jump through time.

Rumiel 08-30-2010 11:47 PM

That.. actually sounds like something really fun to read o3o huh

Hermes 08-30-2010 11:51 PM

Haha, that sounds interesting. xD

I've been working on something with a Hitchhiker's tone that's a fantasy, too. It's not nearly as epic in scope as Hitchhiker's is, and I have terrible trouble with how to narrate the thing. Traditionally, you would figure the "all-seeing narrator 'Once Upon A Time'" type thing, but for some reason it doesn't sit well for me. Overdone or something.

EDIT:

And a few weeks ago I ran part of my story through http://iwl.me/, which generates an author that you write similarly to, and I got Douglas Adams.

It was a moment. :'D
