I do not believe I have heard of Frank Turner, though perhaps I will look up a few of his songs later. Do you recommend any one in particular?

And it is true, sadly. Simply looking between crochet and knitted works it is easily visible that knitting provides a wider berth in which to customize one's work and add both texture as well as a pattern to the work. Which isn't to say I have not seen patterns added to crochet, I just find them harder and see much less ways to do so than with knitting. I still prefer my crochet though, and if you get a small enough hook you can become very intricate; I received a lace needle from my grandmother rather recently and I am excited to learn to make doilies and just make super cute little pieces~

femme gauche 05-21-2012 10:21 PM

It's not so much what you can add to make it fancy, as much as the basic fabric that I like. A basic knitted fabric is smoother and, in my opinion much prettier than a single crocheted fabric. But it's much easier to do lace with crochet, and it's great for things like flowers and small motifs. I have just about every hook size from a tiny steel size 14 (don't know the exact measurement but it's about 1mm) to an "S" / 15mm hook... And a similar range in knitting needles. I've also tried tunisian / afghan crochet, which is interesting, and adds a whole different set of looks...

femme gauche 05-21-2012 10:23 PM

As for Frank Turner, the first song taht comes to mind is called "If Ever I Stray," and another good one from the same album is called "English Curse". That album is called England Keep My Bones. If you couldn't guess, he's Australian. And by Australian, I mean English, because I am being sarcastic.

Honey 05-21-2012 10:25 PM

Yeah, that tunisian /afghan style was what I was referring to~ I haven't been able to do anything like that, since I am not skilled enough in crochet to do so, but I have seen it and I think it is amazing. That is, seeing as i have seen little more in crochet than single, double, half, and intricate motifs and doilies. Though in truth I mainly just need to practice my crochet and i am sure that after enough times sitting on the couch and just crocheting I could eventually be able to make the afghan, or at least a granny square. (And yes, i don't know how to make a granny square and i still call myself a crocheter, they confuse me greatly. ;n; )

Honey 05-21-2012 10:26 PM

Ah, yeah xD it is hard to pass sarcasm across the internet, though I will add those to my watch later list and see how I feel about them~

EDIT: Another song for you~ xD http://youtu.be/E5V7nfZEhMs

femme gauche 05-21-2012 10:31 PM

Well, I've learned all I know about knitting and crocheting from the internet. Initially youtube, and then ravelry, knitty.com, and pattern sites. Eventually I got to buying books. Most of them are pattern books, though. Afghan crochet requires a particular kind of hook, unless you are making a very narrow strip. Grannies, however, are something of the bread and butter of crochet. But you can still be counted in its ranks without knowing the granny square, I assure you.

Yes, well, if you look up one of the songs, chances are a few of the others will show up on the side of youtube, if that's where you plan on watching XD. He is described as being "folk/punk" which you might think an interesting combination but based on the Mumford and Sons song might not be too far out of reach.

EDIT: Wow, i saw that video once, a million years ago, based on... I think i was on the director's website because he worked with some of my favorites a couple of times.

Honey 05-21-2012 10:35 PM

Bah, I am only now beginning to find things on the internet in relation to crocheting xD I learned the old style way directly from my Grandmother, which came with some mistakes, apparently. For the longest time I was intimidated with the patterns and their abbreviations for chains and stitches, though now that I am warming up to them I can finally see just how much can be made aside from scarves xD Though soon D< Soon! I will achieve creation of a granny square.

It certainly is an interesting combination. I have heard plenty of folk, but not much punk, though from what I understand of the genre I feel like it could make a very nice combination and balance out well.

EDIT: Oh yay xD I have to say the music is half the fun to the song, all of the balloons~ Though i did not know the video was that old, I only recently learned of the song

femme gauche 05-21-2012 10:40 PM

I came into knitting basically by the fact that I like crafting, and I was trying to find a way to recycle plastic bags and old t-shirts, I cut them up into "yarn" and then taught myself to knit via the internet... The very first thing I ever knit was made out of plastic yarn using two pencils. That was... I think... four years ago. Maybe. I don't know. I don't keep track. But my mom was never much of a crafter, she doesn't have the sit-down patience for it, and my grandmother did crochet but never really taught me as I couldn't get beyond the chain... Well, I'm left handed so I imagine that was part of the challenge. Actually I don't think she ever really thought about it much and later in her life she was losing her vision so she couldn't really do it herself. I promise you there is a video out there which will help you make a granny square.

Yeah, I like punk and the feel of it, though obviously I'm not exactly part of the "scene" and really, I'm about 20 years too late, but it is a nice starting point to work from as it has a lot of emotion in it (even though it is mostly angry).

Honey 05-21-2012 10:46 PM

Awe, that sounds similar to how my grandmother came to crocheting. She had one of those really large crochet needles and she could make rugs with her sewing scraps too small to be used in a quilt. And my mother wasn't either, though my grandmother was a saint. With the patience of a god and the willingness to both teach and correct errors she was a craftswoman through and through. And I know there are videos XD And probably thousands of written instructions too. Half the challenge for the videos is finding someone who holds the needle the same as me, because otherwise i have trouble, and instructions without one or two letter abbreviations are always nice, even if I can recognize many of them. But I will search for one on one of my days when I feel like crocheting~

It is true, a number of my friends from school claim to be a part of the 'scene' era and I find that all the music they listen to is angry, and I can't really get into it. Though, I gave a listen to English Curse and I have to say I like it a lot XD

femme gauche 05-21-2012 10:53 PM

Haha that works. Yeah I just have a motivation to try to craft and make things all the time... It's another one of those zen things, too. But I only have the patience for small projects, because even those take hours... XD. At this point I am generally able to pick up new patterns just from written instructions because I understand them clearly enough. But in the beginning I had to check and re-check videos to get it right.

Yeah, I am not talking about 'scene' era, I'm talking about the punk scene XD. But that's cool that you like it! Well, there is a difference between angry about everything and screaming about it to pointed anger in a relevant situation.

littl3chocobo 05-21-2012 10:58 PM

pretty avi sweetie, i did not think it as you at first XD

Honey 05-21-2012 10:59 PM

For me it is odd because while most of the time I have no hesitation to begin a project, I get in moods where I literally want to do nothing else except craft. Like, I wouldn't crochet for months or have the idea to and then BAM I am crocheting twelve hours a day for a week or two and then I lose my willingness to do them XD Half because of a sore hand and because I am just tired. But I know what you mean, it is similar to baking, where abbreviations make sense after you read them often, but when you begin you're like 'what does Tsp. mean?'. It just takes practice -w-

Exactly~ Plus English Curse it is really catchy XD and rhymes well

And D'aw, is it really not me, Cho? xD

littl3chocobo 05-21-2012 11:02 PM

it kind of is but it is not expected XD

Honey 05-21-2012 11:03 PM

Now that I can see xD I like it, but not a whole lot. I will keep revising it and making new ones

littl3chocobo 05-21-2012 11:05 PM

got new glasses?

Honey 05-21-2012 11:07 PM

Nah, I got new ones fairly recently, remember?

littl3chocobo 05-21-2012 11:08 PM

i know two sets but you said you can see now i figured that to be the reason

Honey 05-21-2012 11:09 PM

u-u non, silly

femme gauche 05-21-2012 11:10 PM

Yes it is kind of exactly like that, just in a different medium. And I sort of do that as well but I don't tend to leave it completely for any length of time... But I'll be sort of not doing anything with it for awhile and then it'll be all clear and then... nothing. So I am trying to do motifs - small things which can be put together to make larger things - to help keep progress going.

Yes, catchy, rhymes well - those are lovely aspects as well. And generally important in making a song fun to listen to.

littl3chocobo 05-21-2012 11:10 PM

so paint lady, hi? >>;

littl3chocobo 05-21-2012 11:13 PM

post in silk and brb, one last lookie-loo for food before i decide to leave the house or not

Honey 05-21-2012 11:13 PM

...paint lady? ;n; and ah...okay cho

That is one things motifs do, they take a little bit but once you work on enough of them it gives you something to put together later.

and yus. Or even if it is not direct rhymes, words that simply flow

Honey 05-21-2012 11:17 PM

what would the prince do when he makes her go walk with him, cho?

littl3chocobo 05-21-2012 11:32 PM

tell him he is not exempt from tonight, no box and from now on they walk together

Honey 05-21-2012 11:34 PM

Is he taking them through the gardens now, or just long enough out of the chapel to let him know?

femme gauche 05-21-2012 11:34 PM

Flow in poetry is helpful, moreso than the classic rhyming alone.

Yeah, but that way you can work on something different but still consistent, and work toward something actually useful.

Yeah, I'm distracted... Sorry I can't add much more to this conversation right nwo XD.

littl3chocobo 05-21-2012 11:35 PM

it is ok i am just waking up myself

whichever you would think works better

Honey 05-21-2012 11:38 PM

Bluh poetry though >n> Can't stand it

and exactly, do the work earlier and then it is time to put it together you are prepared

no worries, Femme, the conversation seemed to begin to dwindle anyways

and bluh, i will ponder up something for my silk post =__=

littl3chocobo 05-21-2012 11:39 PM

flip a coin? i sort of want them to meander, the prince will stay if they do not fight

Honey 05-21-2012 11:40 PM

Well if you want them to meander you should have just said so to begin with, it was why i was asking joo

Poggio 05-21-2012 11:41 PM

So I dunno how long my connection will work tonight =3= it is giving me a headache.

littl3chocobo 05-21-2012 11:43 PM

so i am painfully thirsty and we have little to drink in the house

Honey 05-21-2012 11:44 PM

were you going to make a drink/food run afterall or no?

Poggio 05-21-2012 11:44 PM

There is always water, and kool aid xD.

littl3chocobo 05-21-2012 11:47 PM

i found food(sort of) no, the water is messed up no drinking it for a hile so no koolaide and i drank my water this morning and did not go to the store after work

Honey 05-21-2012 11:47 PM

Fuck, fuck, tris, deleted my post

Honey 05-21-2012 11:48 PM

So there is nothing to drink at all?

littl3chocobo 05-21-2012 11:49 PM

there is my fish's water X'D

Honey 05-21-2012 11:49 PM

I don't think Eros would appreciate it if you did that xD

littl3chocobo 05-21-2012 11:52 PM

no prolly not though i really ought to change it soon v.v
