Moonshadow 01-15-2017 12:58 AM

I'm thinking I am not sleeping enough.
Yesterday I took two naps, and felt better.

trystan830 01-15-2017 01:02 AM

yeah, that might be it. the times i've had a headache, sleeping definitely helps!

mdom 01-15-2017 01:08 AM

Finished my first book!
O Mandarim, by Eça de Queirós. I read it in Portuguese, there's an English translation called "The Mandarin".

trystan830 01-15-2017 01:12 AM

yaaay mdom! =)

Moonshadow 01-15-2017 11:06 PM

good for you mdom! I finished my first one too, and I only have 30 pages left on Hyperion.

@trystan: I'm loving Hyperion, in the last 2 days I've read over 200 pages. It is very good, I have decided to read the sequel.

trystan830 01-15-2017 11:10 PM

oh awesome, Moonshadow! =)

Moonshadow 01-15-2017 11:41 PM

Yeah, you kinda encouraged me, you spoke of some of his other books and I did a little research on him and he is awesome.

I don't know if I told you that I read Drood by him and it was quite a trip.

trystan830 01-15-2017 11:58 PM

i haven't read Drood.

there's a book, i don't know if it's by Simmons or not - i took a look at a list of his books and it might be Flashback (?) - there's a drug that enables the user to relive a happy memory, and the narrator's mom (or someone) is addicted and i think that's part of the plot... maybe?

Moonshadow 01-16-2017 12:19 AM

I think that is his book.
Just checked it is his book.
Got very mixed reviews on Amazon.

trystan830 01-16-2017 12:21 AM

oh i very rarely pay attention to reviews. i love it, and the reviewers hate it. same with movies

Moonshadow 01-16-2017 11:52 PM

You know I am sure you are right about that.
I have bought books or seen movies that are raved about, and I couldn't stand them.

trystan830 01-17-2017 12:10 AM

i enjoy pretty much everything i watch (movies and tv shows) and read.

it annoys people who want to bash on it, and here i am, "i love everything!" XD

Moonshadow 01-18-2017 12:09 AM

I don't love everything, I am very critical especially of books.
But I carefully choose what I watch and read so I am rarely disappointed.

trystan830 01-18-2017 12:30 AM

yeah, it's rare for most people to like everything.... but i'm weird that way. XD

trystan830 01-19-2017 11:41 AM

book one done... and my list has been updated! (i'm post #7)

Moonshadow 01-19-2017 11:58 PM

Trystan:that is not weird, it is nice! I wish I wasn't so critical.

I've read two books so far I should update.

trystan830 01-20-2017 12:04 AM

i'm anything BUT critical. there's really only one book i've been critical of, and that's because i'd read something on just about every page that reminded me of something else from somewhere else i've read. *sigh*

Kaderin Triste 01-22-2017 08:34 AM

*rolls back in*
I am not usually too picky with books just because I'm generally just reading for entertainment so unless tje writing, characters, or plot are really horrible, I generally enjoy the book.
There are a few genres that I really don't care for as a whole though.

Moonshadow 01-22-2017 03:36 PM

@Kad; what genres are those?
I used to think syfy was beyond me, but now I understand it better because I know a bit more about science now.

I read Hyperion and now am reading the sequel The Fall of Hyperion and if I'd tried it 2 years ago I would have read 10 pages and dumped it.

There are a lot of genres and authors I won't read mostly I don't read pulp fiction.

Moonshadow 01-22-2017 03:37 PM

@Trystan there is a lot of plagiarism in the book industry.
authors "borrow" whole passages sometimes from other books.

Kaderin Triste 01-22-2017 03:59 PM

I don't read romance, crime/mystery/detective novels, and I avoid westerns.

Moonshadow 01-22-2017 06:30 PM

Idon't read romance, and westerns, thrillers, court room stuff.
I like a good police procedural now and then. If they are well written, plotted and if the characters are deep then it is a good read. The best ever police procedural I have ever read is: Faithful Place by Tana French. If you ever want to expand a bit, try that one.

Kaderin Triste 01-22-2017 09:13 PM

Eh. Police procedural just sounds like a fancy modern way of saying "detective/crime novel.

trystan830 01-22-2017 10:04 PM

Moonshadow - oh i don't doubt that. but this book used plot devices and things that i'd read in a number of other series, and i'm not really a fan of reading through page after page 'this reminds me of Dark Hunters, and this reminds me of Rachel Morgan, and this sounds like the Chicagoland Vampires, and they did this in the 'Chosen' series....'

yeah, it gets tiring after a while. so i only read that first book, i think it's a trilogy?

Moonshadow 01-23-2017 01:21 AM

@ Kad: I used to work at a library so "police procedural" is what the genre is called. There are now different categories of mysteries: some of which are craft mystery, cozy mystery etc etc. I have a friend that reads mysteries exclusively and she can rattle off all the sub-categories. When she was talking about "craft mysteries" I told she was saying "crap mysteries' because to me that's what they are.

@ Trystan: I am not a big fan of series. I knew Hyperion had a sequel and I am enjoying it, but I'm ready to get done. Now I find that there are two more books! (Endymion and The Rise of Endymion)

trystan830 01-23-2017 01:26 AM

yeah, i do remember you mentioning you're not a fan of series. i quite like 'em. =)

enjoy Endymion and The Rise of Endymion if you read 'em!

Kaderin Triste 01-23-2017 03:25 AM

Ah I see...
I suppose regardless of various categories, those types of books are just boring to me.

Moonshadow 01-27-2017 12:42 AM

@ Trystan: I might give them a try, but not right now. I'm almostfinished The Fall of Hyperion, it is not as good as Hyperion.

@ Kad: some of them can be quite boring! It depends on how well the main characters are developed, that is what makes it for me.

trystan830 01-27-2017 01:08 AM

yeah, i understand that too, actually. XD

Moonshadow 01-29-2017 12:39 AM

Hyperion was just so amazing, and a compelling read.
I actually wish I had stopped at Hyperion

trystan830 01-29-2017 12:43 AM

glad you liked Hyperion! i actually don't remember all of it, really.

Quiet Man Cometh 01-31-2017 01:47 AM

Oops, clicked the wrong thread. Nothing to see here!

I'm still working on my own challenge I picked up last year. Anyone have any recommendations for a book with a pink cover?

Moonshadow 01-31-2017 11:29 PM

Woah! Our lucky day then, we love new people here.
A pink cover, let me see: a book called Pretty in Pink?
There must be one out there with that name. haha

Moonshadow 02-01-2017 04:39 PM

I just updated my list so for January I read 3 books.
The same amount of books as last January but last January I read Drood by Dan Simmons that was 941 pages! What a tome!

I'm really liking this author and I plan to read 2 more books by him: Endymion and The Rise of Endymion

trystan830 02-01-2017 05:31 PM

I finished reading The Hutt Gambit....now onto Rebel Dawn.... my last Star Wars novel! now i can get started on the list of books that came out last year that i put off while reading Star Wars. =)

Moonshadow 02-02-2017 12:31 AM

How many STar Wars novels have you read? Is it a whole series?
(I showed a new person today the plushie you made and she thought you should have an Etsy shop and sell Alien plushies)

trystan830 02-02-2017 12:53 AM

there's a lot of series in the Star Wars 'verse. most of the books I read are considered Legends now that Disney got to the series.

so.... if you do want to know, here's what I've read, starting with Star Wars (A New Hope) in 2011. (this list is in chronological order, not publication or my reading order. don't say I didn't warn you):

uhm, yeah.

as for the alien plushie, a friend has suggested me and her having an Etsy shop, but I'm pretty sure that Etsy will take a percentage of your sales as their fee. that's why I have my little advertisement in my signature. =)

I currently have The Stone Diaries by Carol Shields that was left over from college and I think that passes for a pink cover.

However, I'm more interested in my new Clive Barker book about the Hellraiser story and my book of Ezra Pound's poetry than I am about that pink cover, and I still need to make it through my own "tome" which I feel bad for neglecting, along with all the others that follow it.

I also need to find a book by an author that shares my first name, a book that will become a movie in 2016 (challenge is out of date so I think that I will just read a book for an upcoming film, whatever date it happens to be), and a young adult book.

Not sure what counts as "young adult" anymore. Does anyone have any suggestions? I might just go an ask my niece. I have a Death Note book (not Manga, book) but I'm not sure where that falls.

Moonshadow 02-03-2017 12:59 AM

@Trystan WOW! you have read a lot of Star Wars books! you obviously enjoy them.
Oh yeah Etsy would probably take a percentage, but it might be worth your while becuse you will reach more people? but what do I know, I just love my plushie, did I tell you his name is ALF?

trystan830 02-03-2017 01:04 AM

yep, i've read a lot of books, but there's more than what i listed up there. =)

the other thing is, they're custom-made, and i usually don't like making the same thing twice. so i'm thinking my inventory of i have on hand would be ... weird.

i'm so glad you like him! and yes, i do believe you mentioned you named him ALF in a PM. :)
