They would wash them selves in water and then cast bad spirits into paper made dolls and send them down the river to purify the villages. it was a family event held once a year that started long before the Edo period.

yeah and they have to go through this insane ritual to become a shaman, and marry a god after very intense ritual. In which they have to wear a brides Kimono for 100 days then go into a trace ( which could last up to 4 days, with minimal food ) until they are visited by a god that becomes their guide to the spirit world. Its a lot like having a patron saint. Except you can see dead people. I love it. I love it and I want to write and make story about one and the demons he fights.
