Demonskid 10-12-2012 12:31 PM

Nandattendayo!
(what was that about)
ouo

coda coda coda tell me my pokemon game really is teaching japanese x'D
if you watch the tv on the game the one channel and show claims to teach japanese OxO

Coda 10-12-2012 12:42 PM

Actually I think (though I'm not certain) that it's "nani yatten da yo" which would mean "what are you doing?!", or possibly "atten da", which would make it "what is it?!" Both make sense and I've never seen it written out to know which it is.

Breaking it down: First, "nani" is "what". After that, you have "yatten da". This is "yaru" ("to do", rude) in -te form (making it "doing"), plus -n da for emphasis. And then "yo" for even more emphasis.

If it's "atten da" instead of "yatten da", then the verb is based on "aru" ("to be", casual) under the same conjugation.

Edit: *does a bit of research* It's "yatten da".

Demonskid 10-12-2012 12:45 PM

The only thing that comes to mind to say right here is.. I know nani kanji x'D

My stomach hurts to much at the moment so nothing is computing XD

Coda 10-12-2012 01:13 PM

That said, you may be getting "nan da tte" mixed up with it. This is "nan da" (casual form of "nani desu") which means "what is it?" plus tte for emphasis.

This "tte" can also be said or written as "to" (which is technically more formal) and it's the same tte/to that you hear in phrases like "___ tte nan desu ka?" ("what is ___?", polite) or "___ to moushimasu" ("I am called ___", formal) and functions vaguely like a verbal quotation mark, although it's hard to really explain.

Edit: And don't confuse "da tte" with "datte"; they're two different things. :P

Demonskid 10-12-2012 01:14 PM

xD I typed it out as it showed up on my pokemon game.. my AMERICAN pokemon game xD

If you watch the one channel on tv on the english verison there is a show that supposedly teaches you phrases

Coda 10-12-2012 01:20 PM

Wait. Seriously? XD *rubs head* Okay, that's awful.

Demonskid 10-12-2012 01:22 PM

Ahahaha x'D I know. I had to ask if what they said this was, was what it really was or not xp

http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Television

Quote:

For the last twenty-five minutes of each hour, other shows such as human interest pieces are broadcast; these include "Eyes on Unova", "Your Pokémon", "Personality Assessment and Horoscope", "National Gymquirer", and "Unova News". Other programs shown at this time are "Koukan Talk", which teaches Japanese in the North American games; and "PokéQuiz", which quizzes three kids on the Japanese names of Pokémon. There are even infomercials advertising overpriced items.

Coda 10-12-2012 01:32 PM

I know about Koukan Talk; it was in B1/W1. I just don't watch TV in the game that often and the few times I DID see it come on, it was actually right.

Demonskid 10-12-2012 01:40 PM

i never watched the tv before x'D I was only doing it for the tv metal in B2/W2 xD now I'ma be watching it lots

Coda 10-22-2012 11:11 PM

So the latest Homestuck update includes a lot of Japanese.

It's pretty kanji-dense and you can't highlight the text to copy-paste it so I couldn't look it up very easily, and what I did understand looks like it's written by someone who knows enough Japanese to make a Google Translate reverse-translation readable, but sound pretty awkward in Japanese itself.

It's also rather sexually graphic, so if you don't like that kind of thing, don't go try to read it. ^^()

Demonskid 10-23-2012 09:11 AM

what was homestruck again? ^^,

Coda 10-23-2012 02:27 PM

One of the most popular webcomics on the Internet. >.>;

http://mspaintadventures.com/

Demonskid 10-23-2012 02:29 PM

I don't really read webcomics oxo unless its cianide and happiness

Demonskid 10-24-2012 12:45 PM

ok so I am gonna try to turn some Romaji into Kanji xD lets see how I do *its easier then turning kanji into english xp*

What I am working on is my new signature. I always take a song I am into and put my favorite verse into my siggy.. since this song is new the lyrics haven't been put out yet i can only find the 1minute version in romaji xp. I'm also going off of what i can hear too.. cause half the romaji have 2 different words. like the one i found on dA had tsukui.. but its sukui.. TV Nihon had dase but it sounds like dassou. and some places wherelike kioku roots.. someone had kioku no roots but you don't here no.. oxo, oh and at hanpa nee ze.. someone had it hanpa janee ze.. but i don't hear the ja and neither did tv nihon..

MAGIC TIME! TRICK janai! mahou HERO hanpa nee ze, kioku ROOTS mogurikonde, kibou wo sukuidassou!

Magic Time, It's no Trick, The magic hero is no pushover, Dig into the roots of memory and save that hope!

(translation is from TV Nihon.)

MAGIC TIME, TRICKじゃない! 魔法HERO半端ねえぜ! 記憶ROOTS潜り坤で希望を救いだっそう!

made the font bigger just to see the kanji ><

oxo

thats the song its from but i couldn't find TN's subtitled version =w=

Coda 10-31-2012 12:48 AM

I forget if I've posted these before.

履かなく舞い散る雪を見ていた (hakanaku maichiru yuki wo miteita)
最後の景色は白く切なくて (saiko no keshiki wa shiroku setsunakute)
凍えた指先二度と君に届けて (kooeta yubisaki nido to kimi ni todokete)
二人の足跡 残らず消えてく (futari no ashiato nokorazu kieteku)

"I was watching the fleetingly falling snow" (I had to look up "maichiru")
"The last scenery was white and painful" (I had to look up "keshiki")
"Let my frozen fingertips reach you a second time, and" ("todokeru" means "to deliver"; it's used here poetically to mean "reach out")
"our footsteps will disappear without leaving a trace" ("nokorazu" more literally would mean "without leaving anything behind" but I've adapted for poetry)

Demonskid 10-31-2012 08:58 AM

I might pull out my L'Arc~EN~Ciel cds and get the booklets out to see if i can't translate them.

Squid 11-02-2012 11:41 AM

This thread is so amazing!
It could really help me improve on -my- japanese.
One technique that I find helps with specifically kana is using flash cards.
Or use index cards and play a sort of memory game.
One way that could help is to remember the kana itself is trying to relate the kana with a latin letter or number.
But after a while, you would want to stray away from that so you can try to remember it yourself.

I only know about 75% of the basic hiragana, and I haven't even started on the katakana yet :P

Demonskid 11-02-2012 11:44 AM

xD I got my kana down though some of the katakana gets confusing at times. After memorizing the stuff to some extent, reading kid stories really helps :3 I have a link up there some where to a site with some.

Squid 11-02-2012 11:48 AM

I'm scared to learn kanji...
I know that most people will put hiragana next to kanji, in the case that people don't understand it...
So that reassures me xD
When I go to college, I may take a Japanese class in order to go over anything I may have missed when teaching myself :3

Demonskid 11-02-2012 11:55 AM

I'm trying to find a Online School that I can afford XD
Kanji.. I'm learning that little by little xD going by what grade schoolers learn first. >3

Squid 11-02-2012 11:59 AM

That's what I'm doing with just about everything xD
Just listening to toddler songs, constantly repeating hiragana until it gets into your head.
Yeah, that works :D
Maybe you could help me sometime, you seem more advanced in it than I am :3

Demonskid 11-02-2012 12:02 PM

xD I'm not advanced at all.

Coda suggests that translating Lyrics helps people learn :3 it does help

that and I play some japanese games by emulators >.>,

Squid 11-02-2012 12:18 PM

That does help a lot :3
I know a lot of catchy and popular japanese songs.
But I've noticed that, of course, those songs use slang and skip some grammar, as most songs do.
So what I am doing is just learning it all, -then- learning slang xD

Demonskid 11-02-2012 12:20 PM

Yea the slang will probably get to me later on too..

I did a reverse translation for my siggy xD the theme song for Kamen Rider Wizard, i couldn't find the Kanji Lyrics so what I did was take the romaji and english translation and make the Kanji my self ouo

Squid 11-02-2012 12:22 PM

I have never heard of that before :o
What is it?
And also, on the topic of japanese games, I saved up money for a Super Famicom, and it comes next week :3
I am so excited, though I don't know which games to get.
But I'm hoping that it will help me understand it all a little xD

Demonskid 11-02-2012 12:23 PM

I've played Okami Den japanese and some of the newer pokemon games in japanese xD

Kamen Rider?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamen_Rider_Series

Squid 11-02-2012 12:28 PM

Awesome :3
Yeah, I know a few Nintendo consoles that have games in both english -and- japanese, so I may just buy some of those.
And Kamen Rider looks pretty cool xD

Demonskid 11-02-2012 12:34 PM

I really gotten into Kamen Rider a lot lately.

I also watch a lot of anime too. That helps figuring out grammar. Anime, Japanese Dramas, Music and Games.

Squid 11-02-2012 12:37 PM

Ooh, me too :3
Which animes have you watched?
I have only ever seen Death Note (In japanese), Ouran High School Host Club, Clannad, and a few others...
I'm not -obsessed- over anime xD

Demonskid 11-02-2012 12:47 PM

oxo, *thinks*

Sailor Moon, Full Metal Alchemist, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, Full Metal Panic Fumofuu, Monochrome Factor, Loveless, Saiyuki, Burst angel, Blue Gender, Inuyasha, Bleach, and a lot more I can't remember at the moment xD

Squid 11-02-2012 12:53 PM

._.
Wow.
I've only ever HEARD of about... 3 of those ;~;

Demonskid 11-02-2012 12:57 PM

I'm an Otaku ouo,

Squid 11-02-2012 12:59 PM

I see that xD
Well that's cool :3
I don't really know of any anime that has a good story...
Except for Death Note.
That's a -great- story.
Recommend any animes? :3

Demonskid 11-02-2012 01:01 PM

Anything I just listed? xD Fruits Basket had a good story thing is .. they made it before the manga was finished so it doesnt follow the full true story.

UFO Princess Valkryie.. .HACK//Sign was good.. um.. Disgaea was cute... @o@

Squid 11-02-2012 01:05 PM

Well, I meant any that I actually -knew- what it was about xD
I've heard of the Hack one before, though again, never followed it...
And now I'm tempted to watch Disgaea ;~; I love the cute ones.
There's one show that I am actually ashamed of watching xD
It's called Chi's Sweet Home, and it is SO CUTE.
It's so cute, I even got my 27 year old friend into it :D
Though, it is just a show, not an anime.
But you should watch it just because :D

Demonskid 11-02-2012 01:14 PM

xD we used to have a staff member named Chi!

Squid 11-02-2012 01:16 PM

Cute xD
What japanese movies are there that are good? :3
