She looked up the name of the stuff on her phone just to see if people still eat it. She saw some advertisements for the relish, so it was still a food product today. She also saw the Urban Dictionary entry for it. "Oh ew! I knew it had to of had a naughty meaning too. Now that stands for, um..." she sat there trying to figure out how to word it for someone like Ben. "Well the stuff guys put out, to make babies..." she said scrunching up her nose.
|
Benjamin looked over her shoulder at the phone see the advertisements and nodded. That was it. But out of a can? Prepackaged in factories? He was used to his homemade, but he supposed the world had changed quite a bit since he was a part of it. He continued looking as she pulled up a page on her phone titled Urban Dictionary. If he wasn't a ghost right there, he would have paled and backed away so his chill didn't affect the woman too much. |
"Thank goodness," she said after a moment. "Yeah I supposed a lot of your old sayings, customs and other vernacular has a much different meaning then they did in your time. It comes with the times I guess. Things that are outdated get a fresh brand and what not. Some for the better, some for worse." she shrugged. "I guess they figure since nobody from that time is alive anymore, nobody is gonna say anything about it." She stood from the counter and put her plate in the sink. "I should get some sleep. I'll go out and put in more job applications in the morning," she said and yawned.
She then went to her laptop and brought up something different on the screen. "Since you can't move heavy things that well, I called up an old novel up on my computer. Just use this key to scroll down." she said showing him the down and up arrows. "the whole story is on here so you can read it at your leisure. Goodnight Ben." she said and then headed upstairs. |
Benjamin sighed, not liking the pause before her affirmation as if that was something a gentleman like him would do. All of that aside, he was as far as far could be from a sexual deviant. He'd upheld Christian beliefs having been raised in a Protestant household and had been saving himself for marriage. After a moment he typed, Evidently, this was one of those things for the worse. Have you heard of this ehm...more negative meaning of the word? He was disappointed when April told him that she needed sleep, but she was still in the land of the living and had needs that she needed to adhere to. Benjamin understood that.((Did you have any preference as to what the novel was? From his time or modern?)) |
((I think she'd try to find something close to his time frame or close to it. Maybe like Wizard of Oz or something lol))
April left the kitchen for the upstairs and went to her room. Sadly she didn't get her bed put together yet, so she would have to just sleep on the mattress with her sleeping bag. Tomorrow for sure she would get it put together and made so she could actually sleep IN bed instead of in a sleeping bag. She would settle down and go to sleep pretty quickly. Even besides the excitement of talking with Ben, she was exhausted and fell asleep pretty fast. She had interesting dreams of Ben, him being alive and not a ghost. It was kind of a romantic dream. He was courting her in the way they did in the 1800s. She woke up the next morning and yawned. She stretched and went down to the kitchen to make a bowl of cereal. She looked at the computer to see how far Ben read. "If you're here Ben I'm saving your progress on your story and bringing up the typing prompt." she said as she brought up the blank Word Perfect document and waited for him to say something. |
Over the course of the evening, Benjamin had made a lot of progress. On top of being quite literate and quite educated, in his life Benjamin was an avid reader. The Wizard of Oz was much, much easier than what he'd accustomed himself to, veering more towards Eliot or Dickens (occasionally dabbling with the Romantics like Wordsworth or Blake when he was in a poetic kind of mood) than Baum so it was new literature to him which suit him just fine. Having nothing else to do over the course of the night he'd gotten halfway through as it was. One thing was certain, he'd never paid American literature of his time any attention, and he wished he would have. |
"The Wizard of Oz was one of my favorites." she said. "My mother would read it to me when I was a kid. There's many other stories in this universe, I can bring them up once you finish with that one." she offered and then grabbed a bowl from the cupboard and then poured some Lucky Charms into it before pouring in milk and adding a spoon. "So how far did you get in the story?" she asked over a mouthful of cereal.
|
Ah, a children's book. That made sense. When Benjamin was a child, his parents read to him as well, and this reminded him greatly of some of the things that he'd heard audibly, but as for his own reading he tended to focus on works that were more...pointed. He took his seat by the computer and wrote down: |
She nodded. "I'm glad that it cured your boredom. I can leave you books on my computer to read at night. Even some newer stuff. If you like fantasy there's a whole long trilogy with Lord of the Rings. That'll keep you busy for a while. They're pretty long and extensive so it'll take you some time to get through them."
She then finished up her cereal and then put her bowl into the sink and ran water into it. "I'll be taking a shower and getting dressed so I'll see you in a bit." she said and then headed back upstairs. |
Benjamin smiled and soon, Long and extensive sounds promising. At this point, I'm not entirely too picky. I've just been...stuck. Nothing to do. This has been a real blessing. He'd heard of The Lord of the Rings through the family before. They'd made it into a cartoon series and he'd seen seen glimpses of it. Then again, it was for children. It was for this reason he'd only seen glimpses as the adults were always in another room and he tended to linger towards them, hoping they'd be intelligent enough to pick up on his cues. |
She hummed to herself as she stripped down her PJs and hopped into the shower. She got all nice and clean and wrapped herself in a towel to walk into her room. Most of her clothes were still in boxes needing to be put into her chest of drawers, but some she had out in a suitcase until she got to it. She wasn't sure how long it'd take before things were set up in her room so she could put them away.
Once she was dressed, she headed downstairs. That morning, she would go apply at various stores and shops in town to try and get a job somewhere. Then she'd stop at lunch and then come back to start setting up her bed. It was only a matter of screwing on the headboard and footboard to the frame and adding her mattress. She didn't need Steven for that, she was pretty handy on her own. Speaking of Steven, she saw that she got a missed text from him last night. She must have been so intrigued by Ben that she totally forgot to check her phone. She apologized to him and saw that he wanted to come by and hang out if she had the time. Being the next city over with an hour and a half drive, their visits would be few and far between, so she accepted and would expect him to come over next weekend. She was lucky that the house that she inherited was not too far away from where she lived before. It was mainly finding the place once you got off the freeway. It was set back in a wooded area with a long driveway but wasn't far from civilization to be rural. She guessed she could get a horse or something if she wanted but she didn't see that happening. She walked up to her computer "Okay Ben, I'm going to spend the morning putting in job applications. I'll come back around lunchtime at noon. So like 4 hours from now. Oh, and Steven will be visiting again this weekend, so he can see that you actually do exist." she said with a smile and then she waited for a response on the computer. |
Benjamin lounged in front of the window, gathering as much of that sweet sweet energy that he could, praying that with enough he could actually speak to her, let her see him. He just had to conserve his energy. That meant that through the course of the day he'd have to be as silent as possible. Perhaps switch to shorter sentences. |
When she didn't see a response to her comment she shrugged it off. "Okay well enjoy the rest of The Wizard of Oz." she said and then headed out.
Hours of putting in applications with no real prospects tend to wear a person out and at the same time, put them into a state of distress. She drove home with a sinking heart and worry of where money was gonna come from if she didn't get a job and soon. She sighed when she came back into the house. "I'm back!" she called and then put her stuff down on the sofa. She went over to the computer to see that it was scrolling down as she walked up to it. She was starving but she also felt like she should skip lunch just in case she had to stretch what food she had if no income was coming in. She sighed and flopped onto the chair in the kitchen and leaned her head back. There just had to be someplace that was hiring. |
Benjamin sighed, seeing her disappointment with a lack of response. When she got back, he'd make it up to her, but for the time being, he must conserve. At the very least, until she returned. |
She tilted her head "Sure, what have you been up to Ben?" she asked looking towards the laptop screen.
(short answer for lack of better response) |
The words Would you like me to try to make myself visible? You might even be able to hear me. appeared on the screen.((Also short for lack of a better response)) |
She read the screen. "Become visible? for a long time? That'd be cool." she admitted. "But I also don't want you sacrificing your energy just to show yourself to me. I mean I already know what you look like but if you think you can do it sure." she smiled.
She sat back and watched the screen and around the window to see if he'd respond first and then try to be visible or just become visible without any other prompt. |
Benjamin shifted over to the computer to respond once more before attempting his feat: I've been saving. I should, in a perfect world anyway, have a surplus. After a brief pause he added, Look near the kitchen island. I'll try to stand near the center. |
She looked in the place that he mentioned and sure enough, he became visible. Sure he wasn't solid enough to pass as human. He was still see through but at least he was able to be seen now. "Well son of a gun, there you are. A nice full body version of you," she said with a smile.
When she heard a slight murmuring coming from his direction she saw that his mouth was moving. If she was quiet she could hear him as if he were whispering. "I can hear you, it's coming off as a whisper though," she explained. "Best to save the voice and use the computer so I don't miss anything you say," she suggested. "But nice to see you again." she laughed. ((I imagine that he's wearing a simple black pair of trousers, and a white shirt. Maybe suspenders depending on your preference)) |
Benjamin smiled at April and straightened his collar as though he'd just tried on a new outfit rather than the one he'd been wearing for a majority of the last two centuries. It was an outfit, unfortunately, that he knew all too well: black slacks, a white shirt, a black overcoat, and a bowtie. He almost wished he'd been wearing a hat when he died, as that might have traveled back with him in the after life. In his worst days, it would have hid the wound...kind of...He'd hoped that this would be substantially better than the last time, and hopefully would purvey a bit more of his personality than the cold text had been. Alright, so speaking audibly was not something he could do readily, not yet. He wondered if he ever would be able to. |
Benjamin cut quite the dashing figure for being a ghost. Now that she saw a full body image of him, in ghost form, she saw how dapper he looked. A nice suit, crisp and well fitted. He looked like a man of stature or at least one of wealth.
Her eyes slid from him to the computer screen as he floated over to it to type. This time she actually saw him doing the act instead of words coming over the screen by themselves. As she read his message she smiled. "Well, I'm glad you don't feel drained. But if you do start feeling less energized do be sure to go invisible again." she said. "On days in the winter, the sun tends to dissapear behind clouds, so we might not get to type much when it's overcast." she said. After speaking, she just sat back and watched him float between the computer and the window. The day was still good and he'd get more sun during most of the day. The house was set in the light forest area outside the city but it had good natural lighting with windows. The direction it was caught sunlight in the front, most of the day. |
In life, Benjamin was tall, lanky. Now in front of April that could be seen as he bent over the counter to type out his responses. His typing style was reminiscent of one who had never seen a keyboard in their life time with a heavy reliance on the front and middle fingers in a hunt and peck fashion. Typewriters, after all, hadn't been invented in his lifetime, and the order of the keys to him made no sense. His time with April, however, helped him get slightly more adjusted and responses were much, much faster than they had been previous. |
April read the screen as he typed. "Oh yes of course...I just guess I assumed you'd be here...I totally forgot that we need to help find your killer so we can put you to rest. I can't imagine it's easy being a ghost stuck in limbo..." she said sadly.
"I wish we could just go back in time and be able to figure out how you died. It would be so much easier than trying to figure it out from people who are long dead and whatever is left from that era that tells about it." she sighed. "Yeah, to go back in time would be better." ((and at the same time she's saying that, he could be typing something similar and then a freak power surge and BAM, in the past!)) |
((Preemptively going to say this post is going to be short to make for an easier reaction time. Uhm. Would they appear together? How far ahead would the murder be? Three days to a week sounds about right to me...but would Benjamin have to wake up and be like whoooooa first, orrr.... ? And then where would April "spawn"? xD))
Benjamin looked at April, his face betraying the fact that he'd be sad to actually be leaving her, but one that said that rest would be nice. He couldn't remember the last time he'd slept. As April spoke, Benjamin leaned forward once again to type, If only we could have the benefit of being there, in real time--together--since we both know now that I was murdered. If only we could go back in time... |
(( I'm thinking that it's a week ahead and I'll have April there with him))
April yelped and jumped back when the charger on the laptop sparked as Benjamin was right next to it. The screen went black and all the lights in the house went out. Then there was a weird pulling sensation like a vacuum was pulling her somewhere. It was dark and she felt like she was falling. She screamed and then she couldn't remember what happened after that since she blacked out. *** When she finally came to she blinked her eyes and let them go into focus. She was laying on something soft, yet solid at the same time...and it was alive! She scrambled off whatever it was and looked around. She saw Benjamin there...but he wasn't a ghost anymore. He was...flesh and blood. She somehow was on top of him on the floor in the kitchen. However, it wasn't her kitchen. The fridge was gone. The microwave too. Everything was replaced with older things. A wood-burning stove, an icebox. Stuff from a bygone era. "What the heck?" she said to herself aloud. She turned to look back at Benjamin. "A...are you...alive?" she asked poking at him. She jumped back when her finger hit flesh and didn't phase through him. |
Benjamin opened his eyes to find himself face to face with...with April. On top of him. He gasped and attempted to sit up but was weighed down by the woman's weight on top of him. Weight that he didn't phase through. And she was warm, lor! Was she warm! He could almost feel her beating heart through his jacket. When she got off of him, he sat up holding his head and gave it a good shake for extra measure. He couldn't be dreaming, could he? He had to be able to sleep to dream, and he hadn't slept since 1844. |
April's head was reeling. How? That was the biggest question honestly. How did they manage to get back in time, with the power of a surge and a laptop. Maybe she was dreaming, but no...she felt Benjamin with her finger and she felt him there.
"We...we're in the house, back when it was still owned by your parents." she murmured. When she heard him say something about her being from 2017, she looked at his clothes and hers. "Well, I don't really have 1800's women attire in my pocket. Not sure how we can explain away my outfit. Let's get up and go somewhere before we're seen. This is a pretty popular room. If you had cooks and servants." she explained, slowly getting to her feet. |
Benjamin nodded his assent and continued tugging on her wrist for her to follow him. "I have a room that no one else knows about...You haven't even found it yet. You'll be safe there," he said over his shoulder, leading her through the halls no longer plagued by the emptiness of a house owned by one, but filled with light with voices drifting out of various doorways. Benjamin recognized them all. They were certainly back in time, back when his parents were here. He could hear their staff and even his mother speaking with the head maid. |
She had no idea the secret room was there, but if she ever made it back to her time, she would preserve it, since it was his study. When she was yanked into the room and she looked around at it being new instead of dusty, she was in awe.
"How..are we going to explain me being here period?" she asked. "Your parents won't believe I'm a relative, and I can't be someone you're courting. I have no parents here for them to meet. Wonder in off the street with no memory of who I am or where I'm from? Amnesia is only something that can work for so long. And what if you do get murdered again? I'm stuck here with your parents in a time I'm not familiar with." she frowned. |
Benjamin sighed, not knowing the answer to that. He didn't know how to explain to them why she was here, and he wasn't able to explain it to her either. He ran a hand through his ruffled hair and looked at her raising his eyebrows, "And why can't you be someone I'm courting? You could be from the countryside, in to see the city. We've been communicating via letter for some time...They don't need to meet your parents! The uh...time, my time, I guess so to speak...it isn't until the night time. We need to check the date for sure, but it's a lie that we may be able to keep up given the time we have." Benjamin spoke faster and faster as his little idea drew steam. He grew silent with her last contention, "Well, we will just have to try to prevent that, shall we?" |
She nodded and blushed at the same time. "I guess you can be my suitor then. We'll have to at least cook up a story that is believable. Somewhere in the country...but then your parents, may see me as an uneducated hayseed hick that doesn't deserve you? Are they all about finding someone from a high social status like yourself to be married to?" she asked.
She sighed and sat in the chair next to the desk. "But what happens if we do avoid your murder. Or find out who attempted it? I mean you'll keep on living and what of me? My family won't inherit the house if you live. Your family wouldn't of moved out and mine take over. Heck, I may even cease to exist if your family doesn't move out." She said. "Then what? You'll be happy but I'll be a 'never was'." |
Benjamin laughed heartily, reveling in the fact that he could actually feel the warmth that came from such an action. "Hayseed hick? No, certainly not. Not all of those that dwell in the country are uneducated. You and your family could be of property, we've been writing each other for a while, you and I, and came to London for a vacation. I offered up our residence knowing that there are plenty of women here you can associate with--" He ran a hand through his hair again, obviously thinking that this little work of fiction wasn't his best, but it would be easier than painting her up as homeless. "But I will need to get you the proper garb first. Lucky for us, my play shortly before my passing received high praise and I made quite a profit. Surely, I can pick a dress up for you." The mention of his needing to be married off to someone of high social status struck a chord with him, the name Sarah echoing in his head. But he said nothing on that, instead saying, "That's why we paint you up to high class." |
As he spoke, for some reason, tears came to her eyes and she started crying. "But..." she started. "Benjamin...you have like...a second chance. You are back in your own time and you're alive. You...shouldn't have to die again. Why wouldn't you want to live until you're older? Find someone to marry and have your own family? If I was given a chance to relive and avoid what happened to me, I'd jump at the chance to have a "do over"." she said.
"If we find out who wanted to kill you and we are able to avoid and prevent it. I'm not going to let you die. I'm sorry. I can't just sit back and watch you get killed. You deserve to live and live out your life. You don't even have to stay here. You can run off with someone and start a life somewhere else. Maybe my family will still get the house if you leave. Even if I don't exist because you stay alive, I much rather that be a thing, then you die again. I saw how elated you were to realize you were living in your own time. I don't want that to go away." She said softly as she brushed tears from her cheeks. |
Benjamin shook his head, his lips pressed together in firm line, "I was meant to die. It's fate. Just as you were meant to be born. I was never meant to have a family, to keep going. I had my chance. I refuse to take yours away." He was resolute with this, and April would be able to see it in his eyes. He'd made his decision. |
"I just wish that...once we knew who killed you, you could just come back and live with me," she said with a sigh. "Like, in my time. Alive. I've grown used to you in my life now Ben. It'd feel weird without you in it. Coming home to an empty house doesn't seem appealing. I liked knowing that you were floating about ready to have a conversation. Now that I can actually see, and hear your voice..." she stopped, knowing that if she kept going, she'd start crying harder.
She took a moment to compose herself "I don't know why I'm so emotional about all this. I guess sitting here and crying isn't getting us anywhere closer to finding out who your killer was. I'll stay here, and you can go find clothes for me." She said using the palm of her hand to wipe away her tears. She looked up at Benjamin. In the flesh, he was much more...handsome. His chestnut colored hair, slightly wavy where it was long. His pristine and well-tailored clothing. His voice was smooth and masculine, but not too much so. Essentially, he was everything she ever desired in a boyfriend. That was it...the more she learned about Benjamin, the more she liked him. She enjoyed his company even in ghost form because he was exactly what she wanted. Exactly what she could never find guys from her own time. She was sad, of him dying because...that definitely put to rest, (pun not intended) any possibility of them actually being together. |
Benjamin's face softened and once more he reached to wipe away one of April's tears, "It can't...it can't happen, April. I'm not a pet who exists to greet you when you get home and be left waiting any time your life beckoned you away. That empty home that you came home to...it trapped me. That empty home was all I knew for several decades. Not even days, but decades, April. Can you imagine that? I've...I've grown fond of you as well, but I simply must pass on." |
She took the book silently and watched him leave with a heavy heart. She sat the book on his desk, she really wasn't in the mood for reading. She looked around the room again. It wasn't exactly small. Not as small as one would think a room behind a bookcase would be. It was actually like a walk in closet. There'd be space for many bookshelves and even a small cot if there was a need for one.
She felt like she needed one. She wanted to curl up into a ball and just wait for Benjamin to come back. He wanted to die. He just wanted to go through the motions of life as it was in the past and get murdered like before. All he wanted to know was 'who'. She could understand she guessed, why he wanted to go. He lived hundreds of lifetimes being a ghost, and it wasn't fair to him to do it all over again. She then felt guilty for wanting to keep him with her. But...if he was alive he wouldn't be a pet to wait for her to come home. He'd at least be alive and with her...She sighed, but in her heart of hearts, that once they found out who killed him, and why...they'd be sent back to her time. Both alive. |
Benjamin knew from experience that being left behind was not a fun endeavor. He at least hoped that he gave her something to do while she was in his private study, like she had for him while she was gone, but he knew that wouldn't be good enough. Once out of the room, Benjamin picked up his pace heading for his father's own personal study. If he could find his father's most recent papers, he'd be able to find out what the date was. |
April realized that she had her phone in her pocket. She pulled it out and saw that it still functioned of course but had no service. It was her only tie to her own world. If she had it out when she was with Benjamin it would be very out of place. She turned it off and sat it on his desk. She knew it'd be safe here and she was saving the battery by turning it off.
She leaned against the wall and waited patiently for Benjamin to return. When he finally came back with a large parcel, panting as he entered the room she stood up. She opened the package and saw all...the things. She saw the dress, that was fine...if you liked a high color, floor lengthed dress that showed nothing but your face and hands. She saw the under things and the corset. Gloves, stockings, garters...a matching bonnet... "Good lord..." she breathed out. "women of this time have to so much to wear...I mean I can use my own bra and panties...nobody is gonna see that." she mused as she pulled up bloomers. "I don't suppose you want to help me put this on? I mean you wouldn't want to see my underthings, being a gentleman..." |
((She uh... she didn't take anything off in front of him, right? xD))
