finished my book, and requested another! yaay!
so it'll probably work out that i've read 39 books for this year, which still isn't a bad showing for me. it's better than some previous years!

Dresden files is amazing! Best way I can think of to describe it:
Take the Anita Blake books. Replace the female necromancer/consultant to the police who sleeps with everything that moves with a male wizard private eye/consultant to the police who does his damn job. The first book hints at a potential romance sub plot, but doesn't seem like it will be a major focus for the series.

trystan830 12-21-2022 12:24 AM

i'm kinda familiar with the Dresden Files XD

and there's actually a reason why Anita does what she does, i read something on Hamilton's blog about that many years back. but then again, i've also stopped reading the Anita Blake books because i do actually want to read more than 25% plot XD

Kaderin Triste 12-21-2022 12:54 AM

Yeah, I've heard her reason. It's stupid, but I get why she did it.
Would have loved the Anita Blake series without the smut though. It was such a unique concept until she turned it into the pornhub of romance novels.

trystan830 12-21-2022 01:18 AM

i get it too.
so i just don't read her stuff now.

Kaderin Triste 12-21-2022 01:30 AM

Yeah, me either. Occasionally I debate picking up a newer book to see if she ever decided to resume any semblance of a plot...but eh. I'll stick with better books.

Dalhanahue 12-21-2022 01:55 PM

*just jumps in the conversation* UUUGGgghhhh. The damned Anita Blake series. So I LOVED it when I first was introduced to it. I really loved the necromancy stuff and everything. And then IMO it turned into an adult Twilight and I stopped reading. The smut didn't even bother me honestly it was just... turned into something that's already so overdone and unoriginal. It's by far one of the biggest disappointments I've had reading a series. I don't think I got past like the 5th or 6th book. It's been so long I can't even remember at this point.

trystan830 12-21-2022 02:26 PM

Kaderin - nope, i don't debate anymore. i follow Hamilton on instagram though XD

Dalhanahue - welcome to the party! feel free to jump in discussions....and maybe join us next year with the reading challenge! :D

Kaderin Triste 12-22-2022 11:19 AM

In other news...almost forgot to add the manga/graphic novels I've read. That ups my book count a good amount. Lol

Dalhanahue 12-22-2022 11:45 AM

I think I might try to join in on the challenge this next year. I do have quite a few books at home I've been meaning to reread or read for the first time. Probably wont set a really high count my first go at it but still a goal to try and reach would be fun.

trystan830 12-22-2022 12:53 PM

of course it does, Kaderin, you read them, so it counts! :)

Dalhanahue - your challenge can be anything you sent it to be. i've seen challenges online, and some of the items are "read a book published in the year you were born," "read a book about somewhere you've been/never been/want to go," "read a book set where you live," stuff like that. or: "read X books," "read X books you've always meant to read," "read books you were supposed to read in high school and now they have a different meaning to you as an adult" (i just made that one up!)

my challenge has always been "read more this year than i did last year." and sometimes it works. this year it didn't, as in 2021 i read 69 books, and this year i've read 39. but that's me. you can design your own challenge. "only read books that have a blue cover." XD

Dalhanahue 12-22-2022 01:02 PM

Haha. Yeah, a lot of different directions to go with. I think I'll feel accomplished if I just get even a handful read through out the year as I just really don't do that much anymore.

There is at least one book I want to go back and read from highschool, since you mentioned it. One of our English classes had Animal Farm as a requirement but I wasn't in that class and it's always one I've wanted to read.

Also when hubs and I started living together he has a few books I want to read. I've always wanted to read the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings books but he also has like The Silmarillion and The Nature of Middle Earth and I think a couple more related but less popular Tolkien books.

trystan830 12-22-2022 01:07 PM

sounds like you've got the beginnings of a plan.

i'll try to post the 2023 reading challenge around january 1, 2, or 3, and link it here when i do. :D

Dalhanahue 12-22-2022 01:18 PM

Awesome, I'll be on the look out for it!

Kaderin Triste 12-22-2022 01:26 PM

Trystan: Lol. I hadn't added them, not because I didn't think they counted, but just because I had forgotten I read most of them earlier because I didn't write the due dates in my planner. xD

If I can manage it, I have 7 more manga at home to read plus 4 books. Though a couple of the books might be carried over to the 2023 list. Though 3 of the books are YA so are a little easier of a read than the books I usually pick up. Was gonna say I could read instead of craft over the weekend but then I remembered it's Christmas. So it's crafting on the go. xP

trystan830 12-22-2022 02:13 PM

Dalhanahue - yaay!

Kaderin - also yaay! :D
