daikokunyo 05-05-2017 02:10 AM

There's a cat artist called hoppip?

Haootia (one of the oldest multicellular organisms)

mdom 05-05-2017 11:46 AM

That haootia looks like a womb...

Lawtan 05-05-2017 01:25 PM

I was more pointing out the similarities...one is sort of an offshoot of the ancestor to the other. (Or at least, that is my understanding)

And yes, I can see the structure looking like a womb.

Jurinjo 05-05-2017 01:35 PM

Hi!

Lawtan 05-05-2017 02:19 PM

Welcome, Jurinjo! *hugs*

How are you doing?

mdom 05-05-2017 03:55 PM

Hello Jurinjo!

I see everything as genital stuff. Like, everything is a penis.

Potironette 05-05-2017 04:05 PM

*stares at polyp*
*stares at Haootia*
Err, they're both orange and have fluffy ends, but polyps are bigger?

Jellyfish are really pretty <3

I've got a fictional alien race that look like giant polyps. They don't see with eyes, but with sonar, and with low level unharmful radiation. Kind of like the things that people use for oil well imaging.

mdom 05-05-2017 07:47 PM

Sounds scary but badass at the same time.
Things with no eyes scare me...

Lawtan 05-05-2017 10:06 PM

Essentially, both are Cnidarians...but it was thought for some time that Haootia exhibited Neoteny - keeping features from the sexually immature stage into adulthood. Some species do this for an evolutionary benefit - it allows them to fill a niche and compete not with the adults, but the children of a competing species.

This is a better polyp picture:

...I'll note that this thought is not certain. Haootia is only known from a few samples from over 500 million years ago, and information changes rapidly as more is gathered/found.

Still...neat?

Tam I am 05-05-2017 11:42 PM

Yes, Law, neat!

Mdom, they're not scary or badbutt, they're light-hearted detail nuts who chatter worse than a squad of cheerleaders on a sugar overdose. I'm weird. LOL

Lawtan 05-06-2017 07:28 AM

...the pun in me wants to say "chatter worse than a squid of cheerleaders" and then have cephalopod cheerleaders.

"Give me a S!"

Tam I am 05-06-2017 07:37 PM

LMBO. And now I'm reminded of the kraken that live in the gas giant.

Potironette 05-06-2017 09:30 PM

Lol x'D!

Polyps in that picture look like glass <3.
Although, when I think about it, I never know if jellyfish are colored or it's the lighting.
