Actually, while gunpowder was a tool of war and gunpowder is used in fireworks, fireworks themselves were a tool of superstition.

The Chinese thought the bright lights and noise scared away evil spirits and ill-will in the New Year.

(Thus ends today's session of "Stuff johnny's Humanities of Asia Professor Would Teach When the Overhead Projector Malfunctioned." Tune in next time!)

Vox 01-01-2011 08:44 PM

Yo kids. So, when does the earthquake end. My poor eyes! ><

Axion 01-01-2011 10:17 PM

Tell me about it... It hurts.

johnny 01-01-2011 10:20 PM

Are you guys using a different browser than Firefox, and it's showing up as more than just "tilted boxes and slightly wonky text"?

Because I can read whole paragraphs and stuff all day and the Earthquake effect doesn't bother me at all.

The Great Eagle Eye 01-02-2011 12:31 AM

Yeah, it doesn't bother me too much~
