ps. I won't be adding picture books to my list anymore. It seems kind of silly.
Although, I did discover author/illustrator Ed Young who write Chinese folk tales. The first book I read was Lon Po Po which is a Chinese folk tale similar to Little Read-Riding Hood, but better in my opinion. I picked up The Cat From Hunger Mountain to see what it's like. I'm hoping to get some extra diversity worked into my bibliography I'm making. I picked up two other picture books: Prince and Knight about a gay fairy tale prince, and Mommy's Khimar, a story about a young girl who wears and plays make believe with her mother's khimar, a garment similar to a hijab. There's another I'm waiting for called The Prince and the Dress Maker, in which the prince in a transvestite. |
didn't Brian Froud do the creatures in Labyrinth too? also i think the baby is Brian Froud's kid too. XD
also, nothing wrong with kids/picture books, unless you'd rather just not read any more. =) |
Well, it's hardly reading when it only takes a few minutes to go through the book.
Taking the opportunity to finally read Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. I've seen the film a pile of times, but have never read the book. And yes, Brian Froud did both movies and Toby was his kid. |
fair enough
and hey, i remembered something without having to google it! XD |
Google destroys good conversations in my opinion. Or rather, it doesn't help when someone's response changes from "I'm not sure" to "google it." Feels kind of rude sometimes, really.
And it's onto the diversity books! Mommy's Khimar and Prince & Knight today. And I believe I have read Mrs. Frisby but remember very little of it. |
hmm, interesting point about google.
also, i'm reading one of my Dune books. yaay! |
Ugh! That's been sitting on my shelf for many years now. Of course, now it's in wrapping paper and I'm not sure which one it is, exactly. My plan to only read my already purchased books has a kink in it now that I'm doing so much reading for school, and buying books again for my projects.
I also get 20% off if I call the "school supplies" which they technically are. I'll be reading "Puddle Pug" for my storytime project. I'm thinking about maybe running a theme and picking up other stuff that relates to pigs, pugs, or puddles. I'm planning on singing "5 Speckled Frogs" and hoping that works out. Need a little more material though. Nat Geo even has a book called "Piglets VS. Pugs" but it doesn't seem very read-aloud friendly. |
hey, reading for school is important =)
|
Totally is!
The 20% thing was also on books purchased for classrooms, which is nice. I think that's also in part because of lot of teachers will furnish their classrooms from their own pockets. I think I'm going to with a young batch of kids. I need another book for the storytime though, since mine is pretty short, or I can write some poems about a pug. I did some looking around and it seems that Pigs and Pugs go together a lot. There's a counting book I wanted to get, but it's sold out at my usual store: "Pugs in a Bug." It has other breeds of dogs in other vehicles as well. I make a point of collecting dog books if they're good. I might start writing the odd thing once I figure out how picture books get made. So I picked up The Prince and the Dressmaker and it turns out it's a graphic novel. It's YA so out of my reading range for my course but I leafed through it and it seems like it's a pretty good book. Of course the focal point is that the prince is a transvestite and no one knows about it except for the seamstress that works for him. However, the seamstress wants her own career as well and can't make it work while working for the the prince, so the issue of conflicts in a friendship comes up, and of course there are the thoughts and concerns of the general crowd when it finally comes out. It feels like there's a lot put into the story to think about. |
that sounds like an interesting graphic novel!
|
I'm going to have to read faster if I want to get through all of these books before the library wants them back. I expect holds to start showing up as other people start work on this assignment. I jumped on it early, and now apparently some people are saying that it's too long (30 books). I've already done half of it. Maybe I can trade the complete 30 books on this assignment for a shorter time frame for storytime. I'm a little concerned about my stamina. I attempted two run throughs of "Shake Your Sillies Out" and I barely made it.
I think it's time to head to the used book store and see what I can pick up to save some anxiety. Already have a copy of Rats of NIMH waiting for me. I've decided I want to buy it. Children's collection and all. ;) |
so i've finished with what i wanted to of Road to Dune. moving on to another Richard Castle book =)
|
:D I love graphic novels but haven't had the honor of reading many. :( only two or three..
though it's my dream in the future to actually get to publish a couple of graphic novels. Q.Q *makes fist* and share a little horror tale or sci-fi adventure with you all.~+ I have Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH too! xD haha, and though I never read it, I too have seen the Don Bluth animated movie! It's great. :] |
The film and book are fairly different in events but the characters are all there. I quite like it.
Now I need to pick my next book. |
I vaguely remember reading it in grade school and noticing all the differences from the film to the book. But mostly I remember always getting caught off guard when it was my turn to read aloud because I was always reading ahead.
|
oh wow!
<xD I forgot I did that in grammar school too! Haha, couldn't help reading ahead of everyone else! I wanted to know what happened before everyone else. |
I hated reading aloud. I could finish books quickly and was usually a few chapters ahead of the class (assuming I liked the book), but I always had issues reading out loud. Felt awkward to me.
Fatty Legs for today. More assessing for children's lit. Need to actually read The Prince and the Dressmaker as someone else wants it! I'm out of my region right now. I think I can just dump my books at a local library and they will make their way back to their proper place if I don't make it home fast enough. Checking out a new ebook/audiobook app called "Libby" run by Overdrive. Not too familiar with it but I should be I figure since my practicum is coming up. |
Yeah, I hated reading aloud too. I tended to talk faster to get my part done as quickly as possible. XP
And then I got put in the "advanced" reading group, because I kept reading ahead and almost always had already read the books we were going to read in class. But that was awful too because I didn't like any of those kids and they didn't like me, so I didn't want to read and discuss the book with them. (And usually, I had already read those books too, tbh.) |
I was always the tiny kid who read the paragraph too quietly, and was easily interrupted with giggling and talking in class. >->;
|
Book talk failed today. I got the video to record but no sound, and I had to recover from my stage fright afterward.
I'm actually not that bad with talking, but presenting gets me at times. I seem to do much better with notes and room for improv. I might have to add some sticky notes to my book for tomorrow. I have, at least, developed a good "lecture voice." |
:] Ahh, well that's a plus! Presenting doesn't always go as planned. <n<; I hated presenting for class..and stage fright can happen to even the most ready of performers. (*cough* it's happened to me and I accidently cut my finger before curtain and I had to dance bleeding *cough*) But hey, :] you know what helps you the most! Notes, rehearsing, etc..
and you get another chance. Practice makes improvement after all. -u- (not Perfect. Because nobody's perfect. >u>) |
Since I'm video recording one of my book talks, I'm tempted to sticky note my script bits to the laptop near the camera. I also need to see if Windows 10's camera app will listen to my headset. It didn't last time.
|
I may have just purchased more books.
I'm also trying to think up a new story time package, this time with a superhero theme. It may or may not have to do with the new Kim Norman book I spotted with Percy the Pug. |
<x] The only childhood superhero books I ever read were Captain Underpants.
I was so surprised that it was brought back like nearly 20 years later and made into a movie for kids. /8} Cheh! And now Dogman is a similar book series by the same creator I think. I've pretty much grown out of those books now, but :] it's amazing how some authors I recognize are still at it publishing works years later. <3 |
Didn't know Captain Underpants was that old. My nephew loves that and Dog Man.
I need another book for my storytime so I can reach my time goal and get this assignment handed in! Blah. We have oldies all over the place here. I'm going to do some bookshelf weeding. Anything I'm half-way through and sneer at, goes in the sell pile. Reading some Pippi Longstocking now. It's quite delightful. I'm thinking superheroes would be pretty easy since Marvel and DC and such publish for all audiences. Just need to find some stuff that's good. |
So I have a bit of a dilemma. It's possible that the kids won't understand "bug" in the book "Pugs in a Bug" so I should have an explanation ready. I could just say it's a type of small, round car. I could also just see if they know what a "punch-buggy" is, and that might be easier. I could also just print out a picture and say "this is a bug car."
Thus, the other problem. What if the kids DO know "punch-buggy?" If I show them a picture of a VW Bug, am I going to start a mini fist fight? What if they decide to do each for each page of the book? (They need to see the pictures after all!) WHAT IF THEY CAN SEE MY CAR OUT THE WINDOW?! Okay, yeah, it's late, over drama ;). But I did actually include the "popular game" issue of kids potentially hitting each other in my write-up. It seems like a legitimate concern. Hitting is bad. |

also, i want to go through my bookshelves as well, there's a LOT of paperbacks in there that i know i haven't reread since we moved (10+ years ago), and not sure i will - mostly romance novels, actually. there's a lot of YA vampire fiction that i know i'll keep, but i have romances, a lot of Dean Koontz's older books, i'll have to see what i have. most of it might just get donated to my library. much easier than anything else. |
I feel like I should get to reading some of the manga on my room shelf. :[ I mean, I said I would, but I keep forgetting/neglecting it..
Would manga count for this challenge? I did put it on my list, <x] but I'm not sure. I'm kinda sidetracking from Dorian Grey, but I've never even touched Fruits Basket... >.>; |
sure, i'd count manga. have fun with Fruits Basket. i haven't read it, but i do remember the title from when i worked at Borders =)
|
Aaaaah Borders. <x] I remember when that was a thing.~ <3
Like Circuit City...or Mervyns. ;u; Or Lucky's Supermarket..man, now I feel old. xD |
yep. i worked at Borders for about a year, from september 2010 to september 2011. now i'm at michael's, which is just as dangerous XD
|
XD hahaha! I getcha. I've been to tame Michael's and some pretty nightmarish ones too. <x} Last time I went, I picked up stuff for my Christmas project/present. :] I made a wreath for my dad that was Slytherin themed, since he's a Slytherin. xD
|
heh very cool! i blame Michael's for me learning to crochet XD
(also, i'm Ravenclaw) |
YeaaaaaaaaRavenclaws unite! >w-
*raises hand as if in a class lecture because I am a dork and am also Ravenclaw!~* |
woot!
(and it's okay, i'd raise my hand too) ;) |
I had to. <w<;
|
heheh, awesome! =)
|
-u- *shrug* gotta represent coolest Hogwarts house yo. <3 Okay, also might be the most collectively hidey-hermit, "I'm reading, shhhh!" kind of house, <x] but hehe hey! We have a common room with the best view ever anywhere in the castle. -U- Coolest.~+
|
I think I was Hufflepuff in the last quiz to took.
I don't know of Borders, but I'm guessing USA? I recall Circuit City in a TV commercial sense but I don't think I ever went to one. I remember some old bookstores that were in the city, Bollum's and Duthie's, and before Coles (and everything else) became Chapters, which became Indigo, which is now IndigoSpirit. I bought a copy of The Prince and the Dressmaker since I like it so much, and picked up Best Pirate, since it has dog pirates and my dog fancier self appreciates the attention to breed traits and doggy anatomy. ;). It's also cute. The main character Augusta is an English Springer Spaniel. I have also put off the Trouts and switched to Confessions of an Imaginary Friend. |
ooh, agree with that, Merskelly!
lately, i've been getting Hufflepuff when i take a sorting hat test. my older daughter is Hufflepuff. we also gave a sorting hat test to hubby, who knows a few things about Harry Potter, and he sorted into Gryffindor. younger daughter has tweaked it so it puts her in Ravenclaw, so that makes her Slytherin in my opinion. so i need to be Ravenclaw, that way we have one of each House in my home. XD yeah, Borders was in the US, it was a big bookstore, associated with Brentano's and Waldenbooks as well. now the only brick-and-mortar stores that i'm aware of in my area in Barnes & Noble. i think there's a Books-a-Million at one of the train stations in philly though.... |
