Lawtan 05-03-2014 09:31 PM

*Falls asleep in library*
I'm adding some content :D
Enjoy!

Also,
Mixing Science and Magic: A Recipe for Disaster?
21 Ways To Eradicate Campiness From Science Fiction
...and The Electrification of Human Corpses

I won't add these to the main Library because they are not factual enough...but I wanted to share something I am trying to look into...

Vincent 05-03-2014 09:36 PM

Ohh~ Awesome
-excited- :3

Yay for more content~

Lawtan 05-03-2014 09:39 PM

Lol
It is just more stuff...
I need to branch out on some areas to make the Library more entertaining...

Vincent 05-03-2014 09:48 PM

How to eliminate Campiness from Science Fiction?
What's Campiness? o.0

You can do it, lawman. :3

Lawtan 05-03-2014 10:27 PM

Campiness = Cheese = things that are stupidly bad in plot (Straw characters based only as an extention of a wiki-defined viewpoint, plot points that would never make sense, even in wacky Wonderland, use of special effects and the like to mask poor plot, or something like several Deus Ex Machina's in one work. (Deus Ex Machina being the writer creating a random happening to save their main character from an issue/threat)

Vincent 05-03-2014 10:29 PM

Ohh now I -vaguely- remember hearing that term used as such..

Hmm sounds like something interesting to read then I guess. XD

Lawtan 05-04-2014 01:57 AM

Essentially:
I want to design/invent technologies that could help people and the planet
(In addition to learning languages, cultures, skills, and mythologies from multiple people, drawing, programming, and storytelling)
...but I have developed an issue with mathematics and the like (a fear/dread)...and I have some issue focusing on one thing at a time.
So, I thought I could research and design my ideas...for incorporation into a science fiction/science fantasy series.

Vincent 05-04-2014 01:59 AM

So you're planning to add to the Science Fiction/fantasy series?
Like, mod-wise, or other?

Lawtan 05-04-2014 02:01 AM

As in, research, design, write story, insert design, and then figure out the medium (game, book, or what)

Lawtan 05-04-2014 02:17 AM

And...finally falling asleep
ZZZZZZzzzzzzz........

Vincent 05-04-2014 02:19 AM

Awwh.
-giving lawman a queen sized bed and another lava lamp-
Sleep well, Lawman. :3

Philosophical question of the day: Should "classic" literature be valued above modern literature of the same quality and non-plagiarized?

Wouldn't those fit under "humour"?

Well, it shouldn't be plagiarized. *doesn't personally like the published fanfiction novels I've seen lately either. Stop trying to mess up the plots of dead people, you guys!*

Lawtan 05-04-2014 03:01 PM

Well, to clarify plagiarization: One of the greatest Epics of Rome, the Aeneid, "plagiarized" the Odyssey and the Iliad.
And several novels are connected/pay homage to other works - really bad ones instead try to steal from other works instead.
I was not really thinking of fanfiction at all here...

I like the Epic of Gilgamesh, Jules Verne, and Edgar Allen Poe...to the same degree I like Diana Pharaoh Francis, Naomi Novik, or Dave Freer.
However, it just seems that sometimes things that are considered "cheesy" or "unrealistic" in modern works...are overlooked in earlier things because they are classical.

Bad romance dialogue in modern things: laughed at or criticized
Bad romance dialogue in Romeo and Juliet: Well, I laughed...

Or, Law is just a crazy cook. *Waves spatula around*

Vincent 05-04-2014 05:13 PM

Eh. I guess you could argue that the 'Classic Literature' could be valued higher, as the ones who wrote them are no longer with us, and are unable to contribute anymore, making them more... 'rare' for lack of a better word.
However, in all honesty I don't know. x:

Ohhhh. Homage/tribute I like. After all, there are only a limited number of stories and characters in the world. As for the cheesy and unrealistic, I think I cut the classic works some slack because I know people didn't know as much then, and they also had different ideas of what was funny or entertaining. So I kinda just view it as alien stuff from another world that I can't really tear apart with as much satisfaction as I can a modern book about people who give their son two bedrooms of his own and stuff their nephew in the cupboard under the stairs.

Of course, for the most part, that cheesy old junk in the really old stories is about the only romance I can take without gagging. XD:p-raspberry:

Lawtan 05-05-2014 04:40 PM

@Vince...
Huh... I would not think that would be a reason to praise the value of the content over another work...rather I would think that would be a "collector's" focus.

I guess that makes sense. I just know that I am almost as likely to meet my favorite modern authors as I am to talk to Socrates. XD

I guess...I don't think of writings (barring perhaps deconstructionist/dadaist works) as alien. Yes, culture and technology is different...but people/society still seems very much similar at the core through history to me.

Vincent 05-05-2014 08:07 PM

Hmm. So I'm seeing that the value of the content to the target audiance, and the collector's value of the content are seperated? o.o

Lawtan 05-05-2014 09:17 PM

Pretty much. Actually...that could be a good (the best) way to put it.
So, everyone doing okay?

Vincent 05-05-2014 09:20 PM

Whoo. XD Go vivi~

I'm doing okay. Just had dinner, debating on when to have dessert. x:
How's the Lawman? :3

Lawtan 05-05-2014 09:24 PM

I wish I had more time to do things...

Vincent 05-05-2014 09:26 PM

Ah. Yeah. Time is an enemy of us all. X:
You'll do it somehow, though, Lawman. -patpat-

Lawtan 05-05-2014 09:28 PM

CHRONOS!!! YOU HEAR THAT!!! VINCENT SAYS I WILL GET YOU!!!!
(lol - Chronos = Titan of Time)

Vincent 05-05-2014 09:32 PM

Lolol. Somehow I can see you studying up to rip open the fabric of time and hunt down wherever Chronos is and strangle him saying 'STUPID CHRONOS! I. AM. THE LAW!'

Lawtan 05-05-2014 09:36 PM

But of course.

(for those without Youtube access)

Vincent 05-05-2014 09:39 PM

Where and how do you keep finding all this stuff lmao. XP

Lawtan 05-05-2014 09:43 PM

Umm...I am getting better at searching for things, and have been listening to several things that give me a broad. basic knowledge of things (as well as what to look into in future games and the like)

Vincent 05-05-2014 09:44 PM

Haha. Yeah so I see. Good to hear though Lawman. :'D

Lawtan 05-05-2014 10:08 PM

So, Vincent, what do you think the Library needs?

Vincent 05-05-2014 10:10 PM

...you're asking ME... someone who hasn't read anything in like forever and everything goes in one ear and out the other if it's complex...
What your amazing Library needs? XD

Lawtan 05-05-2014 10:13 PM

...Yes.
Just want to keep this place interesting for everyone >.>

Vincent 05-05-2014 10:15 PM

Uhm. XD Well that'll take me a minute then. xD
-sits on the floor- o-o

Lawtan 05-05-2014 10:18 PM

*Sits and ponders as well*
