errm, perhaps right after new years when everyone will be checking their respective websites they get on

If you try to make a fantastic giveaway like that coincide with one of the site's events, wouldn't the event overshadow it? Like you just mentioned, a user-run event would provide a better venue for it.

it might, but the giveaway was off-season for tris and it was pretty dead ^^: i gave away like a dozen items and a bit of gold, not much

well there is the catch, events usually run anywhere from a couple days to a week after it is supposed to end

Yeah, that does make it a bit difficult. I think all the spam-bots lately have been scaring users away as well. Things will probably pick up some in May or June. People tend to have more spare time then.
