Fauxreal 03-19-2012 01:12 AM

So how have y'all been?

Fauxreal 03-19-2012 03:02 AM

Sleepy! I should freaking go to sleep!

Coda 03-19-2012 10:59 PM

あのうね、日本語でしゃべるほうがいいでしょう?

anou ne, nihongo de shaberu hou ga ii deshou?

Uh, hey, it'd be better to chat in Japanese, right?

Edit: えへへ、そのメセージは少し女らしいだね‥‥

Ehehe, that message sounded a little girly, didn't it...

Vicious Whisper 03-20-2012 01:32 AM

Coda 03-20-2012 10:21 AM

それはいいよ。気にしないで〜 出来る事を使ってくれ。チャットしよう!
sore wa ii yo. ki ni shinaide~ dekiru koto wo tsukattekure. chatto shiyou!
That's okay. Don't worry about it. Please use what you can. Let's chat!

Even if you don't know a lot, try to use what you do know. It's good for practice, and we can give you tips on how to improve.

I realize my third sentence up there has an interesting structure, so grammar lesson:

shinkamalei 03-20-2012 09:48 PM

I won't be posting up vocab for a little bit. I lost the lists. But I will do a lesson soon-ish. I know I said that before but life is.. busy. And you should add Coda to the list of teachers~ <3

shinkamalei 03-20-2012 11:14 PM

Also, I will be adding my lessons via blogger. So here is a lesson on pronunciation that I think we should have since we don't have anything on that at the moment specific to the thread.

Fauxreal 03-21-2012 12:57 AM

I've been using my friends from Japan to practice on. They help me get my pronunciation correct.

Demonskid 03-21-2012 09:47 AM

ouo coda-sensei! *goes to add to the list*

how would one say 'i cant write in kana on my 3ds' -w-

Demonskid 03-21-2012 09:51 AM

cant seem to edit posts on my 3ds either :/

Coda 03-21-2012 01:12 PM

「3DSにかなを書けない」
"3DS ni kana wo kakenai"
literally "Kana cannot be written on a 3DS" but context usually implies "I cannot write kana on a 3DS".

You might also choose to say "kana de" instead of "kana wo" -- the difference is "writing with kana" instead of "writing kana". There's not a substantial difference in meaning, although I suppose "de" might be slightly preferable because obviously you can draw a picture of a kana in a picture message.

Demonskid 03-21-2012 03:06 PM

domo arigatou koda-san

thank you very much coda

:3

Fauxreal 03-21-2012 07:34 PM

I don't have a 3DS. :( Maybe someday soon.

Coda 03-26-2012 08:29 PM

んもう、サイテー! 仕事で大変な問題があったけど、何しても全然直せない。;_;
nmou, saitei! shigoto de taihen na mondai ga atta kedo, nani shitemo zenzen naosenai.
Ugh, this is the worst! A serious problem came up at work, but no matter what I do I can't fix it.

Demonskid 03-26-2012 08:46 PM

だめ
dame
That's bad.

Coda can't fix something isn't good ono

Fauxreal 03-27-2012 01:59 AM

I just got Roseta Stone for Japanese! <3

Demonskid 03-27-2012 01:04 PM

Oh you lucky thing you 3< that thing is too expensive for me to get..

I order the japanese demo and they sent german instead .. i was like.. no.. xp

Fauxreal 03-27-2012 06:30 PM

Really?! That is terrible marketing.

Demonskid 03-27-2012 06:31 PM

yea.. its why i joined livemocha xD

Fauxreal 03-27-2012 06:36 PM

Oh! I'll have to look that up. I still haven't practiced my Japanese tonight - but I will soon.

Demonskid 03-30-2012 04:31 PM

I should try to get back onto livemocha

Fauxreal 04-01-2012 01:54 AM

I'm learning more words! And I'm going to start watching anime with the English subtitles then without them and see what I can pick out.

Demonskid 04-01-2012 09:18 AM

がんばって よ!
ganbatte yo!

Good Luck!

:3 I can pick out certain phrases and stuff but thats about it ^-^,

Coda 04-01-2012 01:11 PM

I remember when I was at that level. I'm a little farther along than that now -- I can generally follow the basic idea of the conversation if they're not talking too fast -- but I'm really out of practice. ^^;

Demonskid 04-01-2012 01:12 PM

ouo I need to practice more

Fauxreal 04-01-2012 06:09 PM

We all need more practice! If not we'd all be talking in japanese.

Demonskid 04-01-2012 06:20 PM

xD I hope i can one day speak it.. =w= for now I'm settling with "toire wa doko desu ka"

=w= this way I won't wet myself

Coda 04-02-2012 09:30 AM

それで、どうしてそれは日本語じゃなかった?
sore de, doushite sore wa nihongo ja nakatta?
Then why wasn't that in Japanese?

;)

Demonskid 04-02-2012 10:19 AM

*pretends she's saying this in japanese*

I don't know enough japanese to form sentences other then how to ask for the toilet =w=

I tried though ouo I know that at the end the word 'wakarimasen' will be there buuuut... i dunno what else goes in the sentence other then nihongo. xD

Coda 04-02-2012 10:35 AM

The important thing is to try, even if you have to look up every other word in a dictionary and you're completely guessing at the grammar. Truthfully I don't even know how to make that particular statement; I would probably approximate it as "Because I only know a little Japanese, the only sentence I can make is 'where is the toilet?'." ("nihongo ga sukoshi dake wakaru kara, tsukutteru bun wa 'otoire wa doko desu ka' shika arimasen.")

Demonskid 04-02-2012 10:39 AM

OnO

コダさん すごい!
Coda's awesome ono

Coda 04-02-2012 10:44 AM

Crap! I was typing up a mini-lesson and accidentally hit my browser's back button and lost the whole post. ;_;

Coda 04-02-2012 10:47 AM

Here's the mini-mini lesson now >.> Instead of breaking down the whole sentence like I was going to before, I'll just teach a single construction from it that I think is really useful: "kara".

"kara" can basically be read as "because." If you say "X kara, Y" then you are saying "because X, then Y". Combined with the "X wa Y desu" ("X is Y.") formula that most Japanese students should learn right away, you can express a lot of relationships with this. (Note that "desu" + "kara" turns into "dakara". It's not a requirement -- "desu kara" does exist, but it sounds kinda formal -- but it makes it sound more natural.) So for example you might say "inu wa ookii dakara, kowai desu." ("Because the dog is big, it's scary.")

Demonskid 04-02-2012 11:00 AM

I've heard Dakara used before 8D so thats what it means x3
