trystan830 01-01-2016 10:32 PM

*Pops in for a minute*

Sharknado eat your heart out. Here's the over-the-top fish science fiction horror disaster movie: Gyo

Sing it with me now;

Robot Fish, Robot fish
Rotten, Stinkin' Robot Fish
With a Tok-tok, Scream-scream
Fa-la-la-la-lah
We're the legs on your fish!

(This has been an update from Law on life. I seriously love the bizarre stuff Ito comes up with. Edit: Okay, maybe just stick with the manga)

Tam I am 01-03-2016 12:28 AM

Law, the movie turned out not as good as you hoped?

Trystan, what tiger is that?

trystan830 01-03-2016 12:42 AM

Yes and no - Movie is one of those rare occasions where the adaptation is different in a way that makes itself more memorable than the source material. But, it also was an example of animated being more disturbing than the material. Also indulges in "Death by Sex" fanservice horror trope...which is a deader than dead horse. (Though it plays an interesting role.)

Now, bright side spoilers

The themes repeated through the movie are incredibly strong, and better shown. Inspired by the mystery of the horror - never explored in the manga - the characters seek a sense of "Truth". The idea of never letting a loved one go or suffer on their own. The acceptance of a loved one's passing. Such things make the story more hopeful (and human) despite being more gory and squeamish visually than the original work. Ito (and most horror writers) tend to forget exploring such things. I am glad the OVA did otherwise.

Tam I am 01-03-2016 02:59 PM

Aww. Yeah, and sometimes the scariness of a visual work can make the goodness of a story stick with you more.

I avoid stories with sex though, so that one's not for me. XD

I just don't care for gore. or jump scares. So most "scary" stuff older than 1993 or so is not that terribly scary to me, but that does rule out the "Halloween", "Nightmare on Elm Street", and "Friday the Thirteenth" series for me. That being said, B-grade horror like the "Puppet Master" series is more amusing than anything to me.

Though, to be fair, "Jurassic Park" scared the ever-loving Fell out of me when I was a kid.

Lawtan 01-04-2016 12:13 PM

Yeah...I try to avoid such things. But the themes convinced me to mute and work on something else. Let the movie get it out of its system.

Anyway...tigers.

trystan830 01-04-2016 12:56 PM

here there be tigers?

also, i have an extra Toby the cat, and i know people have said they were looking for cats. let me know if you want Toby.

Lawtan 01-04-2016 02:14 PM

trystan830 01-04-2016 02:16 PM
