trystan830 10-13-2022 06:36 PM

well, if i only get 40 this year, my goal next year will still be more than that.

it goes up and down. if i read a LOT one year, i read less the next. and the third year i read a LOT again! XD

Monokai 10-14-2022 05:17 PM

I just procrastinated the day away and even though I want to read right now to be a little more productive all I can see is my drawing tablet which is keeping me glued to staring at my computer screen trying to finish this art piece I'm working on (in frustration).

Kaderin Triste 10-14-2022 06:57 PM

Ah, I have been trash about updating my list. And at popping in just because. xP
Have definitely accomplished my goal of 12 books. Have also used my privilege as library staff to override my renewal limit on a book only to still not finish it and just bring it back. So....reading's been weird for me this year. Lol

trystan830 10-14-2022 07:57 PM

i actually did a little bit of reading at my meal today, woo! :)

Kaderin Triste 12-18-2022 12:19 AM

I have been trash at keeping up with my reading list. I'm sure I missed a few and I haven't counted the picture books I read while checking them in at work, but I've still read a ton more than most years.
And I did get partway though probably like 8 or more books before returning them just because I lacked the motivation to finish them before they were due back.
Will try some of them again next year.

trystan830 12-18-2022 12:22 AM

it's been a while for me too. i did get a book from the library (my first from my new library!) and I'm almost done. so I'll have one more for me for this year.
it's been slow getting back into the reading habit after we moved. i got my library card only a few days after we moved, but didn't take out any books for like a whole 'nother month! XD

and yep, there's always next year. :D

Kaderin Triste 12-18-2022 12:33 AM

Yeah, I can imagine moving sapped the reading energy for a while.

I have 5 books at home still to read, 2 (barely) in progress, and 3 that I might not get around to, so hopefully I can add a bit more to my list.
Also...decided to try out the first book of the Dresden Files....and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna be marathon reading those next year because the first book really good.

trystan830 12-19-2022 12:46 AM

haven't read the Dresden Files, but i have heard it's good :D

trystan830 12-19-2022 07:51 PM

finished my book, and requested another! yaay!
so it'll probably work out that i've read 39 books for this year, which still isn't a bad showing for me. it's better than some previous years!

Kaderin Triste 12-20-2022 07:16 PM

Dresden files is amazing! Best way I can think of to describe it:
Take the Anita Blake books. Replace the female necromancer/consultant to the police who sleeps with everything that moves with a male wizard private eye/consultant to the police who does his damn job. The first book hints at a potential romance sub plot, but doesn't seem like it will be a major focus for the series.

trystan830 12-21-2022 12:24 AM

i'm kinda familiar with the Dresden Files XD

and there's actually a reason why Anita does what she does, i read something on Hamilton's blog about that many years back. but then again, i've also stopped reading the Anita Blake books because i do actually want to read more than 25% plot XD

Kaderin Triste 12-21-2022 12:54 AM

Yeah, I've heard her reason. It's stupid, but I get why she did it.
Would have loved the Anita Blake series without the smut though. It was such a unique concept until she turned it into the pornhub of romance novels.

trystan830 12-21-2022 01:18 AM

i get it too.
so i just don't read her stuff now.

Kaderin Triste 12-21-2022 01:30 AM

Yeah, me either. Occasionally I debate picking up a newer book to see if she ever decided to resume any semblance of a plot...but eh. I'll stick with better books.

Dalhanahue 12-21-2022 01:55 PM

*just jumps in the conversation* UUUGGgghhhh. The damned Anita Blake series. So I LOVED it when I first was introduced to it. I really loved the necromancy stuff and everything. And then IMO it turned into an adult Twilight and I stopped reading. The smut didn't even bother me honestly it was just... turned into something that's already so overdone and unoriginal. It's by far one of the biggest disappointments I've had reading a series. I don't think I got past like the 5th or 6th book. It's been so long I can't even remember at this point.

trystan830 12-21-2022 02:26 PM

Kaderin - nope, i don't debate anymore. i follow Hamilton on instagram though XD

Dalhanahue - welcome to the party! feel free to jump in discussions....and maybe join us next year with the reading challenge! :D

Kaderin Triste 12-22-2022 11:19 AM

In other news...almost forgot to add the manga/graphic novels I've read. That ups my book count a good amount. Lol

Dalhanahue 12-22-2022 11:45 AM

I think I might try to join in on the challenge this next year. I do have quite a few books at home I've been meaning to reread or read for the first time. Probably wont set a really high count my first go at it but still a goal to try and reach would be fun.

trystan830 12-22-2022 12:53 PM

of course it does, Kaderin, you read them, so it counts! :)

Dalhanahue - your challenge can be anything you sent it to be. i've seen challenges online, and some of the items are "read a book published in the year you were born," "read a book about somewhere you've been/never been/want to go," "read a book set where you live," stuff like that. or: "read X books," "read X books you've always meant to read," "read books you were supposed to read in high school and now they have a different meaning to you as an adult" (i just made that one up!)

my challenge has always been "read more this year than i did last year." and sometimes it works. this year it didn't, as in 2021 i read 69 books, and this year i've read 39. but that's me. you can design your own challenge. "only read books that have a blue cover." XD

Dalhanahue 12-22-2022 01:02 PM

Haha. Yeah, a lot of different directions to go with. I think I'll feel accomplished if I just get even a handful read through out the year as I just really don't do that much anymore.

There is at least one book I want to go back and read from highschool, since you mentioned it. One of our English classes had Animal Farm as a requirement but I wasn't in that class and it's always one I've wanted to read.

Also when hubs and I started living together he has a few books I want to read. I've always wanted to read the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings books but he also has like The Silmarillion and The Nature of Middle Earth and I think a couple more related but less popular Tolkien books.

trystan830 12-22-2022 01:07 PM

sounds like you've got the beginnings of a plan.

i'll try to post the 2023 reading challenge around january 1, 2, or 3, and link it here when i do. :D

Dalhanahue 12-22-2022 01:18 PM

Awesome, I'll be on the look out for it!

Kaderin Triste 12-22-2022 01:26 PM

Trystan: Lol. I hadn't added them, not because I didn't think they counted, but just because I had forgotten I read most of them earlier because I didn't write the due dates in my planner. xD

If I can manage it, I have 7 more manga at home to read plus 4 books. Though a couple of the books might be carried over to the 2023 list. Though 3 of the books are YA so are a little easier of a read than the books I usually pick up. Was gonna say I could read instead of craft over the weekend but then I remembered it's Christmas. So it's crafting on the go. xP

trystan830 12-22-2022 02:13 PM

Dalhanahue - yaay!

Kaderin - also yaay! :D

Kaderin Triste 12-28-2022 06:47 PM

Trying to sneak in some last minute reading before the year ends. Have to add more graphic novels to the finished list, but I may be able to sneak in an actual book or two this week too.

Also have panic cleaning though to prep for maintenance to fix my toilet. Did some this morning, but want to get more done so it looks like I'm in the middle of spring cleaning and not like a person who never cleans because depression is strong.

trystan830 12-28-2022 09:47 PM

oof, sorry about your panic cleaning.

i'm in the middle of another Warriors book right now, it's due next Wednesday, but i want to see if i can get it finished by Saturday... aka, the end of the week/year. we shall see.

Kaderin Triste 12-29-2022 02:02 PM

Eh. Panic cleaning turned into panic shuffling of items because I'm still too exhausted from dealing with my family for Christmas to care what maintenance thinks about my "in desperate need of a thorough cleaning" apartment.
Cleared the area they'd be working in and that's a that matters. xP
And I'm slowly working on actually getting it clean. Gotta de-clutter....everything really. Need to work on a much more minimalist approach to stuff especially with how small the apartment is and my limited storage space.

Ah, I need to read those eventually! Go go go! You can do it!

i totally get this. when we moved, we lost a little bit of space for things, and i have a lot of stuff. so maybe this way i'll be less cluttered and have not that much extra stuff.

Kaderin Triste 12-29-2022 02:21 PM

It's just too easy to hoard stuff. I solemnly swear that I will declutter and de-stash everything in 2023!
Part of it is dependent on my friend though as I don't have a car, so getting donation items out of the apartment is something I need them to help with. And they're good at saying "just let me know when" and then not following through on it. xP

I actually have like 3 boxes of books, my old TV, and 2 large boxes of clothes and toys all ready to get taken out currently.

trystan830 12-29-2022 03:20 PM

oh that's.... awkward.
i'd come over and help you out, i'm 5 hours closer than before i moved! XD (of course, i'm still in PA, so still a bit of a trek...)

Kaderin Triste 12-29-2022 04:28 PM

Lol. It would be pretty amusing if you came all the way just to help me declutter my apartment.
xD

trystan830 12-29-2022 10:05 PM

but it could be interesting :)

Kaderin Triste 12-30-2022 11:41 AM

Very interesting indeed. And I could pay you in tarn! lol

trystan830 12-30-2022 11:59 AM

is that kinda like yarn? XD

Kaderin Triste 12-30-2022 01:21 PM

I hate my phone.
Yep. Exactly like yarn in fact!

trystan830 12-30-2022 06:15 PM

oh i know what you mean..... i use speech-to-text all the time, and sometimes it just doesn't understand me.

Kaderin Triste 12-30-2022 06:34 PM

I really just need to adjust my autocorrect settings. Half the time it switches to the wrong thing because I fat-finger the wrong starting letter and it can't figure out that "rscape" is "escape", not "roosevelt" xP
I mean, that example is a bit extreme, but it's not too far off from actual corrections it's done before.

trystan830 12-30-2022 08:47 PM

I totally get that. Sometimes my auto-correct only sees the first (incorrect) letter, not the word as an entirety, so I do understand your example exactly.

Kaderin Triste 12-30-2022 09:07 PM

Turning it off is usually the first thing I do when I get a new phone, but I was too lazy to do it. Might dig around in the settings tonight and fix that... >.>

trystan830 12-30-2022 09:12 PM

ah, gotcha.
autocorrect and speech-to-text can be amusing at times.
I'm also fluent in Typo-ese, too XD
