just take your time, and go through the motions of each step before actually doing it, like figuring out where and how to cut the fabric before you actually do it. it's like that 'measure twice, cut once' adage.

you can do it!

Kaderin Triste 10-03-2017 08:08 PM

First, I gotta get the fabric. Might buy it tomorrow depending on where all my one friend and I go when we're hanging out. But I will definitely be super careful. I cut out my pattern piece for it already. I realized that I accidentally bought the wrong pattern size, but since I've actually lost weight recently, it ended up being okay. I re-measured myself like 10 times just to make sure.

trystan830 10-03-2017 08:30 PM

well, yeah, having the fabric helps. LOL =)

Kaderin Triste 10-03-2017 09:06 PM

If I can't get it tomorrow, I'll just get it on Saturday since I work early. I can buy it (and the elastic I need), then go home and maybe attempt to get the skirt started.

trystan830 10-03-2017 09:27 PM

ah, very awesome! don't forget to post pics! =)

Quiet Man Cometh 10-03-2017 11:08 PM

Death by Video Game complete!

Nothing wrong with scoping out the quality of clothing you buy. I check for pattern details and any holes or issues before I get something.

I miss the days of scrap bins in fabric stores with oddly cut pieces of whatever that I could get for $2 or less. I used to use them for my peg dolls. When 3 square inches of fabric will make a dress, buying by the meter, or fraction of a meter, is a bit much.

trystan830 10-03-2017 11:20 PM

i think my JoAnn's has a "scrap bin" - it's probably just "odd lots" instead of calling it a scrap bin though...

and my Michael's (as well as JoAnn's) does sell fat quarters - which is pretty much an odd quarter of a yard of fabric.

Kaderin Triste 10-04-2017 04:19 AM

I assume it's something all Joann stores do, but the one I work at does remnants for I think around 75% off the normal fabric cost. And basically a remnant is (I think) anything under 1.5 yards of fabric.

trystan830 10-04-2017 12:47 PM

i've always figured a remnant is whatever is left over when you're done your sewing project... XD

but for JoAnn's to sell remnants from a bolt....it might actually be less than a yard.

Derpy McBlueEyes 10-04-2017 03:38 PM

It's always marked on the label how much fabric it is. Most are less than a yard, but sometimes you can find ones that are mire.
Either way, it's a good way to find cheap fabric for small projects.

trystan830 10-04-2017 06:30 PM

this is very true!

That's what they looked like. There would be funny shapes, long, odd pieces, or the odd miss-cut I think. I had one piece that looked like someone had cut half a circle out of it, with the edge being only an inch or so wide, with a couple triangle-ish patches stuck to it. It was red with sequins and I made it into a slit dress for a music diva.

I've looked at fat quarters but they cost too much for me to get a good variety.

I'm not sure if I should start another book right now with all the research I need to do, and the stack I have to go through for it. I'm a little sad that I don't have time to fully go over some of this. Maybe I can squeak in a complete reading of the most relevant (or interesting) looking one before the paper is due.

yep, that sounds about right! XD

the book i've started (The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O.) is a long one (700+ pages, but the font is a nice size), and it's due back at the library on 10/14. i wonder if i'll have to renew it....?

Derpy McBlueEyes 10-04-2017 09:01 PM

I can't verify that all stores have the same sales, but the Joann I work at often has fat quarters on sale for 99 cents.

trystan830 10-04-2017 09:07 PM

i'm going to suggest that my Michael's has them for quite a bit more than that... because we're not a fabric store. there have been a few customers over the past few years that were surprised that we didn't have fabric like JoAnn's does. XD

Moonshadow 10-04-2017 10:21 PM

Two of my favorite stores, along with AC Moore!

trystan830 10-04-2017 11:12 PM

i've been buying some yarn at AC Moore lately. =)

Derpy McBlueEyes 10-05-2017 01:59 AM

We don't actually have AC Moore where I live, which makes me sad.

trystan830 10-05-2017 12:16 PM

i even have a Hobby Lobby that's about 25ish minutes from me.....so that's four craft stores. that's dangerous.

Derpy McBlueEyes 10-05-2017 05:13 PM

We have Joann, Hobby Lobby, and Michaels. But seeing as how I don't have a car, and all of them are over a mile away from my apartment, I only shop them when I happen to be in the area (so, Joann when I work anu shift other than a closing shift, and the other two, almost never).

trystan830 10-05-2017 05:19 PM

ah, that makes sense then

Derpy McBlueEyes 10-05-2017 06:29 PM

Hobby Lobby does have some nice yarns that I want, but I'm not letting myself buy yarn for a while. At least not unless I actually need it for a specific project that I am working on.

trystan830 10-05-2017 10:53 PM

yeah, i do know what you mean by waiting until you have a project you're working on... i do that too. =)

Derpy McBlueEyes 10-06-2017 02:02 PM

I mean, I have probably 8 large bins of yarn if I would get it all organized...

trystan830 10-06-2017 06:06 PM

getting organized is fun, i did it with my yarn back in december =)

Quiet Man Cometh 10-18-2017 05:25 AM

My yarn is neglected in a bin while I decide if I'm going to actually use it or give it to my friend to use.

Also, I see this book in your sig, Trystan, called "Queen of Geek." What's it about?

trystan830 10-18-2017 10:17 PM

Quiet Man - it's about three friends at "SupaCon" and their weekend - it's really good!

PurpleBox 10-24-2017 02:28 AM

just updated my reading list >C< down to one book, might add a few or save them for next year... my mom cracking down hard on me to find work...

trystan830 10-24-2017 11:28 AM

i've updated my reading list (post #7)... i'm now reading book #40 for the year.... and my goal was 33. =)

Quiet Man Cometh 10-25-2017 05:56 AM

I am failing on my reading. I'm doing it all for school right now so even though I have a pittance of my book left I still haven't finished it yet. Midterm on Thursday and I got an extension on Friday's assignment for Sunday. Thank god.

Scythe 10-25-2017 09:22 AM

Been reading a German book pdf I found, it's quite good in explaining some of the grammar rules. There are just too many! Germans themselves don't even know why most of the time, it is just they naturally pick it up with experience. :s-joy:

trystan830 10-25-2017 11:35 AM

i'm quite surprised i've read 40 books so far. guess i'm not crocheting as much as i have in the past...?

Kaderin Triste 11-02-2017 09:32 PM

Ugh. My list looks so good initially, until I actually count my finished books. Only at 18 of 30.
XP
On the plus side, I have one more almost done, so it will be 19 soon.
Unfortunately, the rest of them are really barely started...and I have a lot of projects to do this month and possibly next month...

Moonshadow 11-07-2017 10:49 PM

Hi guys! I have been gone it seems for so long! It's been a month already, real life has really been interfering with my online life.

I have been reading lots, right now I am reading Humans by Robert J. Sawyer. Its the second book in a trilogy called the Neanderthal Parallax.

How has everybody been? <3

trystan830 11-07-2017 11:03 PM

i've been doing well... reading and writing. i finished writing my novel that i'd started quite some time ago, so yaaay!!!

and i'm currently reading book #43 for the year XD

Moonshadow 11-07-2017 11:23 PM

That is exciting, is your book fiction? Do you plan to self-publish?

I'm at 54 or so. I need to update my reading list. Will probably do that in the next few days.

trystan830 11-07-2017 11:30 PM

it's fiction, a time-travel romance. if there's not too much involved cost-wise, i could self-publish it as an eBook.... a friend has had some ebooks published on amazon, i can ask her about it.

Moonshadow 11-08-2017 12:02 AM

Time travel romance sounds interesting. Good luck getting it published in whatever way will work for you.

trystan830 11-08-2017 12:08 AM

thanks!

do you want to read it? i can link you. =)

Grimalkin 11-08-2017 01:43 AM

Erm...is it too late for me to join you all? I have read quite a lot of books this year!
