Prime numbers are defined as natural numbers greater than one that have no positive divisors other than itself and 1. The reason for this definition is that prime numbers were originally intended to be used for breaking down composite numbers into a prime factorization, and allowing 1 as a prime number means that these factorizations are no longer unique (because you can multiply by 1 any number of times, producing different factorizations that still yield the same number).
