@Coro- .... Actually, it's derived from the word 'animation' or アニメーション (a-ni-me-e-sh-o-n) in Japanese, but they shortened it to 'anime' or アニメ (a-ni-me) sometime in the 70's. And yes, while the term 'anime' in English usually refers to Japanese animation, in Japanese it refers to any animation (it's just an abbreviated form of the word).

Honestly, it's a word with western origins. Like I was saying, they've done that with a number of words like kohii (coffee), or depatomento sutoa (department store). But because it has so many syllables for their language, that's why they shorten it to something like depato, which is the same for anime.
