My cockatiel got outside without clipped wings, twice. (He goes outside WITH clipped wings fairly often when the weather is nice.) The first time, he had to have flown for MILES over the course of the day. It was over 24 hours before we were able to get him back. I would see him flying in circles in the air, calling out for us in fear and panic. Then he'd get tired and find a place to land until something spooked him and he flew off again. We caught up with him a few times but we couldn't reach him, and he refuses to fly down. But finally we caught up with him when he was perched on a power line where he was able to CLIMB down instead of having to FLY down. My wife wrapped him in her shirt so he wouldn't fly off again and we rushed him home.
The second time, we got him back in less than half an hour. I think part of it was that he knew the area better this time. We never lost track of him for very long, and we eventually got him to perch somewhere we could reach with a ladder.
