Can anyone offer tips on writing a horror story?
I've been trying to research how to, and I think I sort of went overboard... On a related note, never watch Japanese Anime Horror (Very trauma-triggering) |

Lawtan, I've found that complaining is often the surest way to help something happen, be it figuring out how to do something, or finding the data that you'd already just been searching for. Um, and I would probably go overboard too. And then be having flashbacks. I'm not good at writing scary stuff because I'm a fan, but because... eh. Past junk. Seen some scary stuff. *starts dancing again about the chicken and the dress working* :s-excited: |
I am sort of the "In between" on those sort of experiences. Sorry to bring it up.
On a brighter note, Dr. Peter Hogarth will be a reference once I find some references. |
No no! The bringing it up didn't hurt me any. And I'm actually still thinking about it, because I've remembered that even when I'm not deliberately writing horror, my best friend says that sometimes I give her the creeps. So I'm trying to remember what I had the characters or situation do when she said that. I know one thing, though, that is funny, and kinda horror-y. Ebil chibies who don't really kill things, and have a two word vocabulary.
W00t to expanded reference section! Ahhh! I remember one thing that horror brings up in my google mind! I gotta find this link... Lost Side of Suburbia Comic Strip. |
I think I solved part of it. I recalled something that I forgot. Horror can go with Mystery, Redemption, and Exploration, and in the process (hopefully) remove/reduce the tragic element.
Not really something Library-able, but here is the beginning of a song, trying to recreate the Druid Creation Story. Damh the Bard |
Ohhhh. Yes! I think that's why the stories on that link I put turned out good, because it's not a focus on the creepy, horror type parts. It's finding out the monster just wants to read, or that the boogy man's aft can be kicked.
And the link to the song reminds me of how stories long ago came in song form. Back then you'd give someone a loaf of bread or something, and they'd teach you a song. Now days you boot up the computer and read a web cartoon... sometimes with some of the same characters in it as the old song had. |
Look at the Real Life Section
...Okay. I guess one could say I am working on a universe, a project, that is heavily based off of reality...and mythology... Goals would be: 1) Depict a mix of natural order and natural possibility. Where yes, horror happens, there is a random chance you are devoured by Giant Purple People Eaters, but no matter the situation, there is always further exploration to be had. A world that is governed by quantum mechanics, evolution, nuclear chemistry, and relativity...tested. Which leads us to: 2) Test the limits of science/mathematics/reason...against fantasy/ritual/creativity. What mutations could be explored to relate to creatures of myth? How much can science and magic mix? What is the real difference between the two? And...no such witty transition here... 3) Display inventions/designs/techniques that while, yes, I know few came to fruition, could be akin to "Steampunk" for the 19th century...and depict (as background) different leaderships and issues with them. 4) Retell some of the more forgotten stories, and put twists on more common ones. 5) Encourage the reader to look up and do research, to get involved in the subjects broached. --- 6) (Possible - just realized while thinking on this): Most of my tales (Ideas/small snippets...need to focus on one and get it done) could occur in the same universe, just in vastly different times... ------- Anyway, that was me rambling about my goals/ideas with writing. I'm adding a section on Gibb's research on Aviator's Cone of Vision. Then, Imma passing out for a good 3-4 hours. In pre-scientific times, all of the modern sciences, all forms of industry, and the very laws of nature itself were considered to be magic. |
XD That sounds a bit what I look to do in my Multiverse. Except I don't focus as much on technology, and I've loosed a few beings with abilities that like you say, seem to be magic (but isn't, they can just manipulate things at the atomic level). But yes, exploring the limits, and seeing how characters would react to changes/things that I've never met, or how someone from another background would react to changes/things that I have met. And yes, the encouraging the brain workings of the reader is an important part! It makes things more fun. And gives me a sense of purpose. Retelling and adding twists is much fun. That's how my Fae critters (the atomic manipulators) showed up. Most of the parts of my Multiverse depend on the normal natural laws. An exception is one reality based on a favorite web text RP game, which I suspect might actually be a virtual reality. Otherwise, how the heck else could people be respawning like these crazies do after they get killed? And my nexus between realities is also crazy, but it's been called a fairy land. (and I just fixed up the map I made of it yesterday! Yay)
Um, did that make sense? I was going for agreement and encouragement, but my brain's a bit mushy right now. |
Well, the mush in my brain at the moment got that, so... :D
|
Woohooo! Connection issues averted!

Is it against the rules to be naked in the library? >:
|
*looks at skeleton assistant in the corner*
...nope... |
Ohh, well, in that case I will most likely be stopping by here often to try and catch people in conversations. -Runs around the library-
|
Dear budding Alchemists,
I have located a vast library source of past alchemical works. I warn your good sirs that the category it is placed in, Occult, is somewhat misleading in that the subject material mixes protosciences with one's beliefs and magics. Your most humble servant, Sir Lawtan :3 I may take a break on personally adding sources so I can read/study the ones I have more in depth. Finally... Clockwork Week 1 |
I prefer to avoid naked people with skin (skeletons I don't mind), so please forgive me if I prove uncommunicative.
|
*pokes around the library* Hmmm...
|
o.0 I think that book just poked back.
|
*Misc. Shelf pokes Sei*
Oops, the Miscellaneous section tends to poke back. (Tam, we had the same idea) |
Well, now I have clothing! owo -Climbs on one of the book shelves-
|
Aww...I was going to direct you to the Tarzan section XD
Glad you were able to :3 |
Ohh, I used to love watching Tarzan when I was a kid. -Picks up a random book and starts paging through it-
|
Hehehehe...
We now have Tarzan. |
Hmm
Do you, by any chance, have any secret bookshelves that lead to secret rooms that are secretly hidden in this library? O-o -trying out all the books- |
>:-D...maybe...maybe not...
|
But. you can't say that. DX
you cannt say that... -trying every single last book now- X_X |
*Maniacal laughter*
There are other ways to archive on here than simple links... |
Nooo your making it worrrse.
STAAAHP XD |
Well, I do believe I am pleasantly content with this addition. We now have a Free Anime/Cartoon Channel under Misc.
*The Misc. bookshelf bites at hand adding DVD's* |
O_o' -sees you get bit-
-makes mental note to not bother with the misc section- xD |
Misc. Shelf: *purrrrsss*
|
0-0 dont.. pet.. kitty...
|
It's okay if you treat it right, aren't you, baby. *tickles the wood on the living shelf, to resounding purring*
Anywho, off to bed/work/offline :-) *falls asleep in chair by the fireplace* |
o-o -staying as far away as possible-
Alrighty. x3 laters~ |
*Stretches*
Well, I dreamed of Amplitudehedrons XD (Most recent addition to the library) The Amplitudehedron replaces multiple models and diagrams with a mathematical shape for calculating probabilities in quantum particles. It will hopefully be much easier to understand and work with quantum physics as a result. (just take the summation of a fraction of the area from x1 to x2...Calculus 1 stuff) ...It could also imply that the laws around quantum physics in the universe are determined by the structure/shape of the universe, and some say it would indicate space-time relativity is an illusion. |
*whispers to Vincent* Here's a hint, the possible improbable hidden secret passage to an unknown location is probably where you're least likely to try. :O
*pats shelves while browsing through the Anime/Manga section* Law I think you just made my brain e'splode. @.@ lol |
OnO No Exploding Heads in the Library, please!
*Starts trying to put Kilala back together again* |
This makes me want the crackled skin, so I can look like I've been glued back together, haha.
|
-Yawns a little- How is everyone doing this fine morning? Or perhaps it's night or afternoon for some of you. -snuggles up in a bean bag chair and opens a book-
|
We have crackled skin?! O.O
