Helsinki Harlot 04-26-2012 11:02 PM

That's lame. As far as I know A-kon, money goes in to pay for some staff, and the rest goes to making the event better and better and better. And fans get to create the badges every year, there's a little contest, it's all very personal.

Well I'm glad you have at least that option of nurturing something else amazing into existence. :] So at least there's hope. We have two conventions around here, a smaller one Anime Fest that's good for a smaller chill environment but I kinda enjoy the bigger venues in the cities. We usually end up going out and drinking and just partying with the other con-goers. Those have been my favorite experiences, the random meet ups with other people.

Fey 04-26-2012 11:04 PM

It's sorta funny how many regular con goers I know; artist, panelist, attendees, staff, etc. I was on my way out to Fanime last year and in the terminal about five artist came up to chat with me, we were all super excited that we all were going to be at Fanime. That's why, back to a previous post, Greg is my favourite; he's willing to chat with you in the airport, bar or where ever he sees you. I even, accidentally, kidnapped him out of one of his own panels LOL

Helsinki Harlot 04-26-2012 11:08 PM

That's amazing! That's how I've been told the Supernatural staff is like, and some of them have been known to ditch body guards to go roam around. Haha.

We need more people like that, that don't seem to be put off by the fans and actually are acting like, hey, we're all people, there's just so many of us that wanna hang out together that it's like that. I love the ones that make it feel like we're all just hanging out in a big room.

Fey 04-26-2012 11:10 PM

I love the ones that are geeks in their own rights! I apparently ran into, daaaaaaang, never remember his name...one moment, to me google! Seth Green! I was at comic con a few years ago and he was digging through comic boxes beside me. I totally didn't notice and he asked what I was digging for to 'make sure we're not both looking for the same thing.' We weren't, but he was funny as hell, and it wasn't until later I remembered that I knew him!

Helsinki Harlot 04-26-2012 11:13 PM

Holy hell! Seth Green! I AM JELLO I'm so jealous. I'm glad he's one of those chill guys. I love how certain fandoms specifically generally have a good chance of the actors or voice actors on the show actually being in love with the same type of stuff. Like David Tennant and such for Doctor Who love.

Fey 04-26-2012 11:14 PM

LMAO he better have some Who-love, he married the Doctor's granddaughter!
but yeah, love the 'stars' that are just geeks at heart like all their fans!

Helsinki Harlot 04-26-2012 11:17 PM

Wow. I didn't actually know that! I just know that was his childhood dream. Like that's one of the geekiest dreams to have is "One day. I will play this character. On this TV show."

It's great too because they can relate. Because a lot of those geekier types of actors and such, they KNOW what it's like to be sitting in those chairs or running around a convention or geeking out about seeing someone you kinda respect or are into. It's that "Hey! I get it! I love it!"

Fey 04-26-2012 11:19 PM

Yeah, this is the irony of David Tennant. He plays 10, in an episode called the Doctor's Daughter he meets 'Jenny'(his wife), and it's said she's his daughter(in the show), in actuality the actress is the grand daughter of the fourth doctor. So, the doctor married his daughter/granddaughter....

Helsinki Harlot 04-26-2012 11:22 PM

..... Wow. That's... complicated and kinda weirdly awesome, haha. xD She looked so... young tho'. Like she would be several years his junior.

Fey 04-26-2012 11:23 PM

........she is, by quite a bit if I recall.

Helsinki Harlot 04-26-2012 11:28 PM

Huh. Well more power to 'em I guess? Lucky girl tho'. Haha.

Fey 04-26-2012 11:29 PM

I'll admit, I like tennant as an actor, but too skinny for my tastes LOL

holy crap, it's suddenly storming a LOT around here!

Helsinki Harlot 04-26-2012 11:42 PM

Yeah, I gen, prefer men like, well, perfect example being Dean (Jensen Ackles). But he's just so... adorable and funny and that makes up for it.

Storming? Is it pretty at least?

Fey 04-26-2012 11:44 PM

we just had a cascade of lightling, seven or eight strikes, but no thunder...that's weird....

And lessee...I don't have a current example...:: ponders:: the trend is for such skinny white boys. I loved Thomas Jane in The Punisher, Dean Cain in Lois and Clark, OH!! I will totally use Ryan Reynolds as my example ::thumbs up:: check please!

Helsinki Harlot 04-26-2012 11:47 PM

I don't recognize those first two immediately but mmmmm, Ryan Reynolds. That boy is fiiiiiiiiiiine. <3

Thunder's one of my favorite parts. But I'm a storm fan as is. And rain, my favorite thing is a rain storm. Especially since I have a balcony now that's covered for the most part.

Fey 04-26-2012 11:48 PM

I love rain, but I love snow soooooo much more.
And now I'm sad that you don't recall Dean Cain...now I feel old as the fear is you're too young to have watched LnC....

Helsinki Harlot 04-26-2012 11:53 PM

High five for snow love. <3 Most def. I'm originally from Finland and lived in Germany for awhile, now I'm in Texas and lord the winters are so depressing. I'm a cold weather person naturally too. Like right now there's now wind, it's muggy and hot as hell when my bff in Finland told me it just stopped snowing a few weeks ago and spring is finally coming in full bloom.

And don't feel bad, I just don't know actor names for shit. I'm the one person you can NEVER have a movie conversation with because I don't remember that type of stuff, but I looked up a picture and OMG SUPERMAN? (If that's the right face I saw.)

Fey 04-26-2012 11:56 PM

yeah, lived in deserts and tropical places ALL my life, then moved out here for college. I will NEVER leave, this place has SEASONS, and about six months of winter, or winter-esque weather.

and yes, he was superman...smexy smexy superman.

Helsinki Harlot 04-27-2012 12:02 AM

I love the north. <3 And like you said it's REAL SEASONS. Fall is one of the most beautiful things to experience in a more northern area. It's a tie between Fall and Winter for me season wise. I think they're the most beautiful seasons out of all of 'em.

Agreed. Personally one of the best Superman's to have been around for that role. He's still kinda looking good even though his shape is changing. Didn't he do that.... shit what was it, believe it or not something? Or was that just someone who looked like him?

Fey 04-27-2012 12:03 AM

ah, yes, he did Ripley believe it or not...I think I caught two or three eps of that.

Helsinki Harlot 04-27-2012 12:11 AM

It was on a lot in Finland when I was a bit younger. We're a bit behind on TV so every summer it would be playing for a few years. I mean we JUST got House. (That's another show I'd like to meet a person from, Hugh Laurie (sp?) because I've seen his skits before he ever did House and they're hilarious.)

Fey 04-27-2012 12:12 AM

I don't think I"d like Hugh...he seems like a bit of an a$$, well, that's why I don't like House. maybe the actor himself is good enough.

Helsinki Harlot 04-27-2012 12:17 AM

Haha, that's where we differ. I love House the guy, and actually he's personally a lot more... light hearted, from what I've seen in interviews and stuff. Don't think he's ever done any type of convention type stuff. Which is interesting, that only certain genres and fandoms do this kinda stuff at all. I don't even know how many of the shows I'm into I could actually get this experience with.

Fey 04-27-2012 12:26 AM

most fandoms do it, but some actors are a bit recalcitrant to join in. I know the English VAs for Integra and Walter NEVER leave London, but they came out for Anime Vegas last year...it was OMG amazing from what people said.

Helsinki Harlot 04-27-2012 12:31 AM

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with either of those [/ashamed] but that's awesome. That's one of the best things they can do to show love to their fandom. I hate to keep going back to Supernatural but it's the fandom I'm currently trippin' over and I think just about all of the major characters + a lot of the minor ones do regular appearances in Rome, London, this one in Brazil. And I think a lot of the times their accommodations and such are provided for them.

If The Tribe was still on TV or anywhere near relevant, I'd like to have met them, tho' the likely hood of that happening unless (especially now) unless you live in England, it ain't gonna happen.

Fey 04-27-2012 12:34 AM

both those VAs are from Hellsing(the older series), a bunch of my friends pitched in and got Walter to record a voicemail message for anotehr friend who's a HUUUUUUGE fan. It's amazing.

and no worries, I never got into supernatural...I hear enough though about it from my roomie.

I can't think of a show I'd like to meet actors/actress' from...one here or there, but not a whole show.

Helsinki Harlot 04-27-2012 12:42 AM

D: I am so ashamed to say that for years and years I've intended on becoming familiar with it but only got around to having a few of the manga's and that's it. What I've seen I've loved tho', and the music to it.

Those are some really awesome friends. :] That'd be the greatest surprise!

I actually didn't want to watch it at all but one night I was pretty fucked up and decided, ok, I'll watch and episode. Wasn't impressed. (But then again I saw a season finale with no context) and then one night I had nothing to do and started watching it and it's my new addiction, haha.

Fey 04-27-2012 12:47 AM

I recomend the new OVAs over the original series, I like the animation more, and it follows the manga. The old series does not. badly. But the VAs are amazing.

And, I can feel ya on the sudden fandom. For me it was a resurgence of a fandom. just got back into Who-verse. Was a huuuuuuge old Who fan, sorta fell into New Who.... While I dislike Eleven, a lot, I like nine and ten.

Helsinki Harlot 04-27-2012 01:00 AM

Do you know anywhere I could find that readily available? I mean I'm willing to pay, I just don't have that much access to a DVD player so if there's a streaming site or something that'd be great.

That's a trend I've noticed them do a lot more, re-making some anime's to follow the manga more closely. I think I really like it.

I really need to watch more of the old Who-stuff, some of it's on netflix and I've been slowly working my way to watching it because if you wanna be a fan, I feel like you should at least be familiar with the older stuff (whether you end up liking it or not). And high five for 11 hate. I just... I don't know, there's nothing special about him. The reason any episode I've seen slightly impresses me, is the side characters are done well.

Fey 04-27-2012 01:08 AM

my favourite is goodanime . net for Hellsing Ultimates. They have all of them. It's free, and one of the better sites to watch on. You can also tray anime flavor . com They also have more recent Who in their Drama section(starts with nine I think...could be wrong).

And I'll be eternally sad we'll never get to see most of One and Two...stupid BBC for thinking the show was rubbish and not saving the tapes, or not taking care of them!

Helsinki Harlot 04-27-2012 01:18 AM

Do those sites still work? Because a lot of the sites I used went down when megaupload and megavideo and all that got shut down. I'm hitting a lot of dead links nowadays.

Aaaw, I didn't even know that. Tho'! My sisters a HUGE Doctor Who geek and every Christmas/B-day I buy her a comic book of the original series, so you might get lucky there as far as the original story and stuff goes.

Fey 04-27-2012 01:22 AM

both sites still work insofar as I've tried. I just recently watched about five days worth of shows on both sites(I get bored easily) though there may be an episode here or there that doesn't work.

And there's still audio and stills for a lot of the original two doctors, but none of the actual video. Or a very sad amount of it.

Helsinki Harlot 04-27-2012 01:29 AM

Well bad ass. I'll have to check that out. I'm trying to think of what other classics I've missed out on. The only way I got most of my exposure was through adult swim and then random snippets here and there on the internet when free vids where still rampant.

Aaaw, well that's lame as all hell. Tho' I feel like when Doctor Who came back everyone was kinda shocked at how big it exploded in popularity.

Fey 04-27-2012 01:34 AM

Fav story about old who. so apparently they were building a large highway up in scotland. they had to drain a peat bog to make way for it. at the bottom of the bog they found three original daleks. The show just left them after they sank, after all who cared about a prop for a silly show?

And anything you can think of should be on one of those two sites. which reminds me, I should see if either has the episodes of catseye I've not seen....

Helsinki Harlot 04-27-2012 02:05 AM

Wow. That's a little surreal. But also kinda awesome. lol

I really need to find more things to get into. The last animes I was SUPER into were Wolfs Rain, .hack/, Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, and a lot of the CLAMP stuff. Oh! Yu Yu Hakusho. I just don't have a lot of time to find new stuff.

Fey 04-27-2012 02:08 AM

I don't like most of the 'new' stuff...I think I stopped being impressed after OHSHC...and even then I was only impressed with the japanese original, not the US voice overs. Does'tn mean I haven't watched stuff...just not been impressed.

Helsinki Harlot 04-27-2012 02:15 AM

Agreed. I went to Anime Fest and they had "pre-american" screenings. They had that and XXX Holic and I fell in love! And then watched it all online. I think they picked bad voice actors.

It's actually rare that I prefer the american voices. Like, Prince of Tennis, original? Beautiful, the american dub? Oh so painful. Cowboy Bebop was a genius tho' on the US side.

Fey 04-27-2012 02:24 AM

I......have only watched a few animes in english. the few exceptions are Fushigi Yuugi, Cowboy Bebop, parts of Trigun, parts of Escaflowne, and one episode of the original FMA. Oh, Sailormoon and some Ranma 1/2 as well. Once I got used to subtitles that's all I'd watch. and fyi, Sailormoon, soooooooooo much better in japanese, specially the later runs. Neptune isn't annoying and useless, who knew.

bleh, off to bed now, chat tomorrows!

Helsinki Harlot 04-27-2012 02:28 AM

Never watched Fushigi Yuugi, have a few of the manga's tho'. And my introduction to Sailor Moon was in German, and it's still actually a really good dub, as far as dub's go. (Same with Pokemon and Digimon) the English is still the most hurp a durp version of all those version that I've heard. (I take that back, I've heard the Finnish version of Digimon and it makes me cry inside.)

I rem. collecting all the coloring books and in Germany we had gum packets of them with stickers. :) [ I also have the Finnish manga for Ranma and the German manga for Sailor Moon)

All righty! You sleep well and get a good nights rest. :] Thanks for the entertaining convo tonight so far!

Fey 04-27-2012 10:56 AM

I do recommend FY if you like shoujo stuff. It's looooooong,b ut very, very good. And I love that a lot of the voice actors(japanese) are in Saiunkoku Monogatari(another very good series, very shoujo).

And I wish I could say I slept well...but I slept.
