I don't actually o .o Which makes me realize, I'm apparently racist when it comes to my ocs ^^; But I guess that's mainly just because I prefer to color light skin tones?

Tohopekaliga 12-02-2016 05:52 PM

I think it's sort along the lines of something my dad pointed out to me one day (walking through the artist alley of an anime convention, lol):

If you're not specifically thinking about avoiding, you're going to put some of yourself in pictures you make.

The examples he pointed out were this black guy who made excellent pictures, but all of them, no matter what race was being depicted had a bit of a "black" structure to them (the noses especially), this raver-looking girl whose, uh...yaoi images looked rather similar to her, and, uh...others that I forget.

He actually asked that girl if a picture was meant to be her, and she said it did not. And it was in that conversation that he made that observation.

I think the same thing applies to OCs for things. People are naturally inclined to invent characters similar in some way to themselves.

littl3chocobo 12-02-2016 05:52 PM

it's very common. i see a lot of people making the same three or four ocs over and over and over and over with just tiny tweaks but some skinny oc unnatural hair color/yellow with blue eyes and white people skin is more prevalent than all other combinations combined

littl3chocobo 12-02-2016 05:54 PM

toho needs to take in account that media presence is very much an influence and the most preferred marketable colors are the ones that get advertised most and consequently inspire the most derivative works

Tohopekaliga 12-02-2016 05:55 PM

When I need an RP character suddenly, it's almost always Caucasian with brown hair and green eyes.

Does that describe me?

...Yes.

littl3chocobo 12-02-2016 05:57 PM

X''D i make all sorts of ocs, the only place i repeat is on whether or not it's a dude(hint; yes). frankly though i have only inserted myself in two ocs and nether looked anything like me XD

Tohopekaliga 12-02-2016 05:58 PM

Oh, I don't necessarily try to make random RP characters be me, I just tend to use my hair/eye/skin colors. :P

littl3chocobo 12-02-2016 05:59 PM

so toho does rps?

Tohopekaliga 12-02-2016 06:08 PM

On occasion, yes. I haven't done it much in a while, though.

littl3chocobo 12-02-2016 06:10 PM

fair enough XD

ok, i am hella tired. i need to bed now, nightyo

That makes a lot of sense actually :o That would explain a bit I suppose XD My go to for characters is generally black or almost black hair and bright blue or green eyes. I have dark hair yes, but my eyes are light brown, although I always wished I had super pretty bright blue or green XD

That's true. I know I've been guilty of it, hence why I haven't really made a new oc recently because it always feels too samey to other designs I made/attempted to make ;u;

Tohopekaliga 12-02-2016 06:27 PM

I suppose I should've said "similar to themselves, or what they would like themselves to be." :P I like my green eyes, heh.

Night, Cho. :)

Glitch 12-02-2016 06:44 PM

back when I RP'd I was often a treant. Take that as you will.

But when I draw I draw characters that aren't in proportion, not on purpose just . . . you are your own best reference for proportions. Since mine are elongated and aside from being preggo, I was unable to gain weight so my characters were thin with long limbs and weird hands! Didn't matter what I was drawing even my tree people.

So I started drawing chibis because they are cute and squishy.

Tohopekaliga 12-02-2016 06:58 PM

I drew mostly merfolk when I drew consistently, lol. Proportions were all kinds of not-me.

Glitch 12-02-2016 07:09 PM

Hey side note, just learned from my new parenting pipeline - hatchimal is the toy of the year.

Tohopekaliga 12-02-2016 07:11 PM

I had to google that. :P

It's...a tomogatchi thing stuffed toy? Interesting...

Glitch 12-02-2016 07:31 PM

My friend is going nuts trying to find one for her kid and so I was like "i'll just look online here. . . oh. . . ohh. . . $200? oh. . . sold out everywhere ever? . . oh geez. . . "

Potironette 12-02-2016 07:38 PM

Is it bad the first thing I thought of was putting a hammer to the egg XD? Granted, it looks pretty safe for kids who accidentally *cough* accidentally drop the egg. If I were a kid with a toy like that, I would have dropped it if I saw a video of it hatching :x

Tohopekaliga 12-02-2016 07:42 PM

I feel like I'd have gotten my dad's tools and disassembled it. :P

Potironette 12-02-2016 07:59 PM

As a kid I never had the tools to dissemble things. The one screwdriver was too big. The small ones were much too small. At some point I got a little screwdriver that fit into some sort of thing. But the screws must have been shaved(?) or something, because it wouldn't come out! That sort of killed any attempts to peer into things XD

Tohopekaliga 12-02-2016 08:00 PM

My dad was (he's retired now) a telephone and cable technician, so he had all kinds of interesting tools to poke at things with.

Potironette 12-02-2016 08:13 PM

I have no clue what a telephone and a cable do and what a technician does and why they need tools X'D.

The only tools I'm acquainted with are the hammer and a big/medium/small screwdriver XD.

Glitch 12-02-2016 08:17 PM

I would have totally bought into it because I believed in magic. I believed if I loved and cared for and nurtured anything it might just might maybe come to life for real.

Potironette 12-02-2016 10:07 PM

That's a really wonderful thing to believe!
Living dolls was a thing that I stopped thinking about once I found out toys were breakable, lose-able, throw-able, and cut-able...I guess I really didn't love or nurture toys :x

Glitch 12-02-2016 10:47 PM

I was that kid that apologized to my toys after I threw them or hurt them xD

Potironette 12-02-2016 11:31 PM

Aww that's cute and nice <3.

I was that kid that cut up stuffed animals for...the "greater good". More specifically, I cut up Disney stuffed animals (Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse) in order to acquire cloth to make clothes for other stuffed animals. There was a bunny toy that endured years of being my clothing model before I somehow lost her.

Glitch 12-02-2016 11:35 PM

i did cut all of my Ariel barbie's hair off because I thought it would look good . . . it did not . . .

I put her in a box and looked at her with extreme feelings of shame for years

Potironette 12-02-2016 11:37 PM

At least you were trying to make her look prettier XD.

littl3chocobo 12-03-2016 04:48 AM

i wasw one of those kids who had a doll for the sake of her accessories and not the doll XD it was one of the few things my father did to nurture my artistic side(well aside from 'not noticing' i drew on pretty much anything paper even things you should not draw on). i did not much care for the doll but golly i played with it a lot while i figured out stitches and forms hahaha

Glitch 12-03-2016 01:25 PM

I played Barbies and make believe into the 7th grade ._.

hyjin 12-03-2016 01:49 PM

I went to the hospital last night

Glitch 12-03-2016 01:54 PM

oh my goodness, are you alright??

hyjin 12-03-2016 07:03 PM

Im fine now that the kidney stone passed. But HOLY CRAP it hurt a lot

Tohopekaliga 12-03-2016 07:15 PM

D: Ouch. I've heard those are painful, but I am very happy to say I have never had to deal with one.

hyjin 12-03-2016 07:42 PM

It was aweful. I could barely walk when we got to the ER

Tohopekaliga 12-03-2016 07:54 PM

Well...good to hear you got better, at least! D:

Glitch 12-03-2016 08:06 PM

I had a kidney stone two years ago. I thought I had a bladder infection and then it hurt to breath and my friend kept telling me I was just having a muscle cramp. It got worse and worse and I ended up driving two cities over from my friend's house to get to a hospital close to home. They feel like death that is what they feel like.

hyjin 12-03-2016 08:29 PM

Yep glitch knows how it feels. I wanted to die

Kitarun 12-04-2016 11:12 AM
