The most recent book I finished reading was Ender's Game in preparation for watching the film that was made from it. The movie was somewhat disappointing, particularly some of the major changes that were made -- not to specific events, really, but to the overall tone and, ultimately, point of the book. They made the most readily obvious points present in the film, but did nothing to actually explore any of them, which the book actually does amazingly well.

To be honest, though, that book is insanely hard to put into a medium such as film without taking some rather amazing departures from what the typical movie-going audience expects. On the plus side, they managed to tell the story somewhat well with what the filmmakers were given -- but I'm unlikely to ever watch it again, as I feel there's not really any subtext that I didn't already perceive on the first viewing.

The book is truly an amazing work of science fiction, though -- it does what any good novel does and explores questions that are not readily available without the constructs of fiction, and does so in such a way that reading the book more than once is actually beneficial to understanding what's been presented.

The last book I read...hmm I believe it was The Vampire Armand from the Anne Rice Interview with a Vampire series. That or I finished re-reading Beowulf for a presentation I had for a class. Both were quite good as I remembered the first time I had read them. ^w^

E'zelia Starsong 03-13-2014 04:26 PM

Last real book I finished that I really enjoyed was Obsidian Butterfly by Laurell K. Hamilton of the Anita Blake series. It was really really good~

Saiyouri 03-15-2014 08:23 PM

Van Gogh: The Life by Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith

All I can say is holy crap. 880+ pages of unimaginable hell and beauty.

Kalei 03-23-2014 03:37 PM

Castle in the Sky by Dianna Wynne Jones

Sei 03-25-2014 10:02 AM

I just finished (again) the Obsidian and Blood series by Aliette de Bodard - I read it almost yearly now because I find that it is just that good.

Kaguya 03-27-2014 11:33 AM

I recently finished The Masque of Vyle by Andy Chambers.
For only having 9 chapters it really does drag you in and doesn't want to let go. I don't want to leak anything at all so I will say that the saying quality over quantity is definitely in effect here.

Within the book you get a glimpse into the mystery, wrapped in an enigma that is the harlequins. I enjoyed how the harlequin's interact with each other, they each had their own role within the troupe, which they never brake wither they where in their own company or doing the 'Masque' itself. I found out that 'Death Jester's' have a morbid sense of humour, especially when it comes to being kept in suspense about something.

The solitude 'Motley' is beyond bizarre, sometimes he tries to be serious but it never works, and as soon as you think you know what's going on with him, there's a twist that makes you question what you thought you knew about him or what he had planed.

Some of the words and wording are hard to follow especially if you don't know the army or lore that well. I know the lore and the army quite well but even I had problems with it from time to time on pronunciation of cities, names and the likes. This being said the book does drag you in wanting to know what happens next, at times you can get drawn into the story you can easily envision how the characters feel, their hopes, even feeling sorry for them when things happen and what scenes/backgrounds depict and the emotions they are trying to draw out.

I'll stop there saying that it is well worth the money and leave you all with one of my favourite passages of the book. When I first read it, it made me giggle and it's from the solitude himself:-

Quote:

Motley bowed deeply, appearing greatly chagrined.
"forgive your errant servant, my noble king, I intended only to lighten a dark moment with a warm moment of laughter. I call upon the Masque by my right of sacrifice, as one forsworn to the doom of our people and perched upon the razor's edge between apotheosis and destruction. Would you like to see my credentials?"

Umaeril 03-27-2014 06:03 PM

That sounds interesting Kaguya, I'll have to see if it is on Kindle. I really thought that little passage is great! It is almost Art-Language if you have ever heard of that genre of ...well I can't call it literature, I'll just call it...imaginative writing.

Kaguya 03-27-2014 06:37 PM

It is definitely worth a read.
My hobby also has it's own book line, you can find it in the website Black Library, you may find it there as an E-book.

Umaeril 03-28-2014 09:45 AM

Ok I'll check that out, thanks!

ChibiFujoshi 04-07-2014 01:19 PM

Catching Fire, just before I seen it in theatres =p

Umaeril 04-07-2014 04:27 PM

What did you think about it? I have read it, I loved it.

Vincent 04-08-2014 01:39 AM

I actually havn't read or seen any of the Hunger Games series. o.0'
Well I've seen a bit of the first Hunger Games movie but thats about it. XD
Anyway, I recently read a pretty nice book that was a bit remeniscient of twilight, but different. XD
If I ever remember the name I'll be sure to post back here. ;~;
This girl is like the alpha of her pack and she's sposed to be partnered with the alpha male of his pack at this school, and this human guys transfers in and intervenes everything.
I only read book one, and theres like.. 3 or 4 books to it..

Umaeril 04-08-2014 08:44 AM

Why are there always 3 or 4 or 5 or more books now to a series?

Lawtan 04-10-2014 01:30 PM

Err, that is the definition of a series? More than 2/3 of them.
Also, think acts in a play. Many modern series do follow that sort of line (Unless they go 6+)

Umaeril 04-12-2014 06:17 PM

Authors feel impelled to use too many words, jmo.

Basie 04-15-2014 10:55 PM

Game of Thrones! The first book, I've managed to get halfway through the second before I kinda gave up. Now I've started the first book of the Wheel of Time series, it has been slow going but I hear it gets better

Suzerain of Sheol 04-15-2014 11:21 PM

It actually gets worse. :P

Saiyouri 04-16-2014 07:14 AM

Basie- What was the reason you gave up on the second book?
I was thinking of reading the series and was wondering what you thought of it and the first.

Kalei 04-20-2014 05:30 PM

The last book I finished was 'Look Me in The Eye' by John Elder Robinson. It basicly cronicles what his life and what it's like and living with Aspergers syndrome.

Viridis Aureus 04-20-2014 10:00 PM

Not counting books I read because I had to for class, the last book I read because I wanted to was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I'd read more books, but I just don't have that much time with classes. This summer though! I'll read until I can't read anymore.

Poggio 06-11-2014 01:31 PM

The last book I read was House of Scorpion by Nancy Farmer and I am currently reading Divergent.

It was an unexpected find. I remember when it first came out I got it for a friend for christmas but I am not sure he ever read it. I remembered that fact and decided to buy it for myself. I loved it. I like the author and her style of writing. Its very vivid.

The story itself is very interesting. Its about a young boy that is breed to be a clone and the trails he has to go through. His original donor owns a strip of land that America has let him rule. They farm opium and his donor is basically a drug lord.

Lawtan 06-11-2014 10:36 PM

Well, I recently finished the Reanimator, and am going through other Lovecraftian Works...

One thing I think Stephen King forgot was that oftentimes good works need to have purpose and thought beyond the genre... I feel the Reanimator did so - sort of a "dark side of academia and science" theme...

Areishia 06-14-2014 03:34 PM

Red Dragon by Thomas Harris.

Poggio 06-17-2014 05:48 PM

So I just finished Divergent and its a lot different then the movie. I have to say I find the climax of the movie to be better though the book feels like it was an ending. Which is how I felt about Harry Potter. I am going to see if I can get the second one and start it.

Aenith 07-05-2014 01:00 PM

Know the Night by Maria Mutch.
Won it from Goodreads. Super depressing, but aren't all memoirs?

clealuira 07-20-2014 01:08 PM

Wow, difficult question. I usually only read biographies and I am not sure if they really count. Would have probably been some book about a person with psychic gifts, cant get enough of those type of biographies. Havent read anything since last year though.

You read much Steven King, Lawtan? I admit I'm only familiar with the films, but I find this a curious thing to say. Haven't read Lovecraft either, just one film and aware of some of the popular lore.

Chloe 09-02-2014 10:11 PM

Last book I finished was on my kindle, if that counts..

it was called Alice and Fifty Shades of Grey..

and it was a free book.. normally I don't go for those kinds of books but..

Lawtan 09-09-2014 11:56 AM

*Is going through all of Junji Ito's comics*

Snail people, suicide cults, Enigma at Amagara Fault, and others.

Percy Haize 09-10-2014 10:52 PM

The last book I finished was Eats, Shoots and leaves. I loved it, it was so sarcastic!!!! Lynne Truss knows how to get an audience going!

Saiyouri 09-14-2014 08:47 AM

A piece of crap about the history of America. When it actually spoke about what really happened it was a good book, but the drawn out parts... Not worth mentioning.

OongaChaka 09-25-2014 12:19 AM

Hell House. It was my first time reading from the horror genre, I usually read thrillers. I liked it... loved the descriptions. Didn't scare me... but it was interesting and intriguing.
