I'm going to read Medea and have a laugh at the sheer ridiculous tragedy of the dramatic ancient greek plot. <x} Maybe I'll write up a funny summary here.

Merskelly Metalien 09-15-2019 07:00 PM

This was such a long summary to type out an almost 50 page play x'D

Okay, so this is how Medea went down. /x}
(A little background...)
So if you recall, or are unfamiliar, Jason and the Argonauts went on a quest for the Golden Fleece in a land called Clochis.
The high priestess and princess of Clochis was a girl called Medea and though everyone saw Jason as an intruder and thief after their golden fleece, she wanted to help him.
So she did, and she and Jason fell in love, and in order to leave with him she had to kill her own brother and leave her father's lands to escape.
So Jason and Medea left with the golden fleece and returned to Greece where she helps Jason by getting the two daughters of Pelias, Jason's scheming Uncle, (who was king of Iolcos) to kill their father. And as a result they were kicked out of the kingdom, and so they settled down in Cornith where they lived happily ever after together.

(Okay, now this is how the story of Medea went down...)

And, welp! That was Medea. *shrug* <x'D

trystan830 09-15-2019 09:36 PM

i... didn't read all that. but from what i did, it sounds like My Big Fat Greek Soap Opera!

Merskelly Metalien 09-16-2019 10:46 PM

<x'D It's like crazy dramatic yeah, haha!
I did write a lot, >w>; I tried not to, but I couldn't stop myself..

trystan830 09-17-2019 10:27 AM

heh, it happens. ;)

trystan830 09-24-2019 01:08 PM

so i just finished reading book #35. two more and i'll have tied last year! woot! i think i can do this. :)

trystan830 10-02-2019 11:14 AM

so last year i read 37 books. yesterday i just finished book #37 for this year, and i have a few more still to read this year. yaay! :)

Merskelly Metalien 10-12-2019 04:09 PM

Just finished reading A Doll's House. O_O And boy, was it interesting. <-< It kind of reminds me too much of how I went about things in keeping up intimate relationships.. But I did enjoy it and the ending! o-o I think at the time and place it was written in, it was seen as almost blasphemous and definitely controversial. Think like mid-late 1800's. :[ And in Norway/Denmark/Sweden/Netherlands. It's considered to be a really good play because it sparked a change in the traditional roles of men and women, focusing on the marriage aspect of it. >:/ Like, I know women back then were like considered 1/2 a person, but damn, I couldn't believe everyone was okay with and was not okay with.
It's a play by Henrik Ibsen who wrote a lot of about the hypocrisies of society, and what at the time might have been considered an attack on women, and their sacred duties to their husband to bear children and to their children to raise them into good people, is actually now seen today as the liberation of women, from their caged and load-heavy lives as wives and mothers, and nothing else, unable to escape blame, abuse, and shame.

:] It was a good read. It's really calm and fluttery in the beginning and when things begin to escalate further and further, it gets heavy yo. <u< I think it was also made into a movie in the 70's. :/ I gotta go see if I can find it and watch it. It's for homework, but I'm glad I finally got around to reading something again after Medea. <x}

trystan830 10-12-2019 05:19 PM

i've heard of A Doll's House but i haven't read Ibsen's. one of the stories in Neil Gainman's Sandman books is also called A Doll's House though. (Sandman is on my list to re/read, now that i have the entire series.)

trystan830 10-13-2019 10:50 PM

woohoo! last year i read 37 books. tonight i finished book #38! yaay!

Merskelly Metalien 12-02-2019 01:19 PM

I read The Lion in Winter, which is an interesting play about the royal family dysfunction centering around England's King Henry and Queen Elenore. :]
I don't know if I've ever seen, er, read a funnier or more dramatic soap opera. <x'D

trystan830 12-02-2019 06:52 PM

they made a movie out of Lion in Winter!

Merskelly Metalien 12-03-2019 01:53 AM

I saw the movie too! :D With Sir Anthony Hopkins.
It was pretty neat. x}

trystan830 12-03-2019 12:04 PM

yep. i saw the movie once... a long while ago. XD

Quiet Man Cometh 12-17-2019 02:24 AM

I failed in all the reading things! Or at least keeping track of things. Stress and such, and Christmas.

I signed up for SantaThing on LibraryThing so I have some mystery books coming!

Since my last post, I finished Moral Combat (good book! Actually a good argument and presentation), reading another McTavish book in my book reviews, along with a neat book called "Playlist" that presents classical artists in a more modern format.

I picked up 'Carry On' from the library, since I bumped into this Rainbow Rowel author who seems to be very popular though I've never heard of them. It's thicker than I thought.

Kaderin Triste 12-17-2019 11:46 AM

Gah, I'm so not reading my last....8 books, if I counted right, in the next couple of weeks.
I have failed!
Though I might possibly get 1 more book read if I haul ass and ignore important craft projects that I have also procrastinated on longer than I should have...

trystan830 12-17-2019 12:29 PM

i've read i think two books by Rainbow Rowell... they're pretty good.

i'm currently reading a Chicagoland Vampires book - it's the Heirs of Chicagoland series, the sequel series actually. i hope to finish it by the end of the year.

Merskelly Metalien 12-19-2019 01:36 AM

eUe; I didn't get to reading (unless it was required for class) as much as I would've liked.
;~; Booo...I should do that more next year since I'll be taking the semester off.

trystan830 12-19-2019 12:08 PM

i imagine next week or so i'll set up the thread for next year. :)

Kaderin Triste 12-19-2019 12:12 PM

Lol. And I will transfer my list right over. XD
All those unfinished books...

trystan830 12-19-2019 12:23 PM

lol... fair enough.

Kaderin Triste 12-19-2019 12:46 PM

I feel like I accomplished nothing this year. Not just reading either, but everything. Like....what the f was I doing all year?
Of course for a few months there I was working with no days off...so of course I did nothing those months, but still!

trystan830 12-19-2019 12:53 PM

not that you did nothing - you worked! i did a lot of reading, crocheting, and in november writing. seems like every year for me. :)

Kaderin Triste 12-19-2019 01:43 PM

Yeah....unfortunately, all that work gave me was an undefeatable case of burnout.

trystan830 12-19-2019 02:33 PM

well that's totally not fun.

Merskelly Metalien 12-19-2019 02:58 PM

<:[ I was met with burnout too. Sometimes I think college students work themselves too hard in half a year, that the break is hardly enough time to relax anymore. Everyone is too busy taking care of other things, making sure they have money, preparing for next year and next semester, and trying to take care of themselves all at once.

trystan830 12-19-2019 03:04 PM

{{hugs Kaderin and Merskelly}}

Kaderin Triste 12-19-2019 03:21 PM

I mean, I'm not getting 1 day off per week regularly, but it's just not quite enough time away from people for me to recharge.
But it does at least keep my current burnout level from increasing too much.

Merskelly Metalien 12-19-2019 03:34 PM

*accepts hug* ;_; is the world is run by crazy indefatigable extroverts?...halp!

Kaderin Triste 12-19-2019 03:35 PM

Derpy! Go to work for me so I can stay home and nap!

Merskelly Metalien 12-19-2019 03:42 PM

Meanwhile, for my "break" I'll be having fun writing and stuff, <u<
Can't say it's not work tho,
it's aggravating, and frustrating, and exhausting...but I'm having fun! <x'}
I'd rather spend the time writing than working a 9 to 5 tbh. ;-; Though it's probably near in my future to work a 9 to 5...so I can get money....for myself. ;n; But before then, to LAND a job, I gotta not be a dead fish. <x} I have to convince people I'm alive. >w> If I feel good enough about myself and if I'm clever, I think I can fool them...

trystan830 12-19-2019 03:47 PM

unless it's a holiday, i'm not usually off from either job unless i ask.

by the time december is over, i'll have had off on the 1st, 2nd (road trip across the state to take younger daughter back to college), the 14, 21, 24, 25, half of the 16th and 31st... and randomly off on the 27th. wtf??

that's like the most number of days off in many many months. i didn't even request off the 27th. i'll be confirming that one tomorrow. XD

Kaderin Triste 12-19-2019 03:49 PM

Derpy! Go write Merskelly's papers!
XD

Best advice? If you get along with your parent(s), live with them as long as you can and build up savings. Because rent and utikities and....well...just living is crazy expensive unless have roommates and/or an s.o. ti share the expenses.

trystan830 12-19-2019 03:58 PM

my older daughter - college grad just this past May - makes my inlaws her home base because it's closer to where she works. if she's home, hubby's charging her rent...like $30 a night. since the beginning of november, she's only spent 1 night at our house. LOL XD

Kaderin Triste 12-19-2019 04:00 PM

Well...that would get expensive if she was there more often. XD

trystan830 12-19-2019 05:31 PM

yeah, it would, actually. i think hubby had mentioned something about a monthly rate if she would end up being here all month.

in other news, i have another book at the library. i think i'l l be getting it tomorrow, but i'm still reading the current one (in my sig)...
